The Tides of Love - Pauline Kairose

    PROLOGUE

The marriage eve had to be thrilling and spectacular. Harriet had planned every tiny thing, from the beautiful white flowers to the three-layered cake that stood for their bright future. She was really in love with him and she couldn’t wait to walk down the aisle in her astonishing lace gown.

Nevertheless, twists may come at any time. In the poorly lit hallway of a big hotel, Harriet was motionless; standing there while Weston kissed Marina, her maid of honor. In her chest, her heart was shattered into a million pieces. It seemed as though time stopped so that it could witness this tragic occurrence. The reception music played on mocking her with thoughts of what would have been an enjoyable day. As she clenched her lily bouquet tighter than before, making her knuckles turn colorless and stiffened, Harriet felt completely taken aback. She was amazed beyond words. Shock gripped her body causing it to shake uncontrollably beneath the skin’s surface; it felt much like a violent upheaval or wrenching out of one’s very own heart from its cavity in one’s breast. Before her, an image unfolded a visceral stab to her heart arresting her attention with an almost cruel grip. The intensity of the scene held her captive rendering her unable to avert her gaze as if the very act of looking away would be a betrayal of the raw emotion pulsating within her. Weston and Marina drew apart their hot cheeks revealing their shame. Marina seemed to be trapped in a nightmare with her unkempt chestnut hair and plaintive blue eyes. Weston's gorgeous face was flushed with astonishment and regret but it was too late irreparable damage hung heavy in the air. Harriet stood frozen, a statue of disbelief incapable of processing the betrayal unfolding before her eyes. The reality weighed hard on her breaking the faith she had previously placed in him.

Her mind raced with questions seeking solutions that would never completely fix the torn parts of her heart. Harriet took a step back her shoes quietly tapping on the hotel's marble floor. She needed to get away from the oppressive atmosphere of treachery. As she stepped out of the hotel the night air struck her like a punch and Harriet remembered she was still carrying the wedding bouquet. She let the flowers fall from her shaky palm the lilies scattering on the ground like shattered dreams as she drove away tears streamed down her cheeks.
