Origins of Green Chemistry
The roots of green chemistry can be traced back to the late 20th century when concerns about environmental pollution and resource depletion began to gain widespread attention. Traditional chemical processes often relied on hazardous substances, generated large amounts of waste, and had adverse effects on human health and the environment. It became evident that a new approach was needed—one that prioritized the design of chemicals and processes with minimal environmental impact.
The term green chemistry
was coined by Dr. Paul Anastas and Dr. John Warner in the early 1990s, marking the formal beginning of this transformative discipline. Driven by the desire to develop sustainable alternatives, green chemistry advocates for the implementation of twelve guiding principles that serve as the foundation for environmentally benign chemical practices. These principles encompass concepts such as waste prevention, atom economy, renewable feedstocks, and the use of safer chemicals.
Principles of Green Chemistry
Prevention: It is better to prevent waste than to treat or clean up waste after it is formed.
Atom Economy: Synthetic methods should be designed to maximize the incorporation of all materials used in the process into the final product.
