As the dream of him that waketh, O my Lord! when rousing thyself up, their shadowy being, wilt thou despise. -- Psalm 73:20 [Rotherham]

    I. Dodgy Assumptions

We’ve all been there. We would probably never admit it—but we’ve all been there. Life has left us fatigued and frayed. Our minds are in a ruffled state and our mood is low. Then, within this fog, we interpret every act from others as an annoying, personal insult. Why did she ask that? Does she think I was lying? Why did he ask that? Has he been tracking my every move? Why did they leave me out of the meeting? Do they think that I’m to blame for the recent problems?

Like a whirlwind, the negative thoughts and painful questions bind and torment; then blessedly, after a few good sleeps, all is calm. Sanity and reason return.

We’ve all experienced paranoia; therefore, we can all understand what an incredibly precarious frame of mind it can be. The accumulation of this emotional fraying has even been the basis for battles and wars—both the hot and cold varieties.

    1. Wild Wolves

Thinking less expansively for now, paranoia can become extreme and thereby destructive to mental health. We’ve all heard the phrase paranoid schizophrenic. Although this is just one variety of schizophrenia, it is probably the one that most of us can easily relate to. We can imagine scenarios where the needed relaxation never comes and the sanity never dawns. Maybe our genetics will allow us to slide only so far, yet the sloping descent itself is very common ground.

In particular, it is my belief that some subgenres within ufology and the New Age movement have made it seem okay to struggle with states of mind that are closely akin to paranoid schizophrenia. After all, schizophrenia is becoming very prevalent. There must be some popular causes.

A medical publication recently stated (emphases mine)…

Schizophrenia or dementia praecox is an exponentially growing pathology worldwide, with a prevalence of one in 300 adults. The Greek words skein (split) and phren (mind) are combined to get the English word schizophrenia. Symptoms include hallucinations, delusions, disorganized communication, sluggish planning, decreased motivation, and dulled emotion. It is a debilitating collection of neurological illnesses…

…A characteristic depiction of paranoid schizophrenia usually presents as persistent, frequently paranoid delusions, which in the majority of the cases are auditory or visual in nature, though other modalities can have effects. Affect, volition, and speech disturbances, as well as catatonic signs, are not noticeable. It is not just the psychiatrists, instead an efficient plethora of healthcare professionals is essential to treat and manage patients with schizophrenia
