I Will Come Back Home - LEONARD MAERO W

    DEDICATION

To my brothers and sisters – I love you

    CHAPTER ONE

She was on the main highway driving in the newly acquired company car. Nashipai was a dark skinned lady with dimpled cheeks, a narrow nose and small blue eyes. She was dressed in a blue jeans trouser, a white T-shirt with words Enjoy printed at the front. She was heading to the office of Leo Media Services where she worked as an investigative journalist.

Two years before, she had passed the driving test and applied for a driving license. She had visited the offices of National Traffic Authority severally but what she had got was a flimsy explanation. She had gone to the offices and managed to secure the driving license.

Her left hand was firmly on the steering wheel as she stroked her long brown hair which fell over her shoulders and making curls with the other hand.

She was approaching a corner when she saw a number of vehicles parked at the roadside.

‘Could it be an accident?’ Nashipai thought, narrowing her eyes.

An accident had occurred. It had involved a saloon car and a lorry fer- rying beer in crates. There were several traffic police officers. Some were controlling the heavy traffic that had built up while others were assessing the cause of the accident.

Across the road, two police officers were trying to keep off people who were carrying away crates of beer from the lorry that had overturned, others had cut the trailer and were busy carrying away the metal on mo- torbikes to sell it as scrap metal.

She was flagged down by a traffic policeman. She gasped for a moment and glanced at the dashboard. She was not over speeding. She reflexively slammed in the brake pedal and brought the car to a halt.

Was I driving too fast? she asked after rolling down the windows.

The gigantic officer with a giant belly stepped forward. No, madam, he said in a low voice, revealing brown teeth. He touched his cap and bent over to have a closer look at Nashipai. We are just trying to bring the situation under control.

She was signaled to drive on.

Half an hour later, she stopped at the main office of Leo Media Services. She was supposed to pick the TV crew before embarking on Haki Maxi- mum Prison. Nashipai was going to do a story about a certain prisoner. As she waited for the crew, she took a notebook and went through the ques- tions she had planned to ask the prisoner.

The team left for the prison shortly after.

They stopped at the reception of the highly fortified prison. A tall, dark

prison warder came to meet them.

Hello, said the warder, stretching out his arm. He was dressed in a green uniform and black boots. He was a dark, muscular man with a towering figure.

Hello too, officer. Nashipai replied, stretching out her hand. She felt the

    roughness of his palm.

I hope you are the team from Leo Media Services. We have been waiting for you. He said in a deep voice, crossing his hands. We have already made arrangements.

    Thank you.

This way please, said the warder, leading the way along the corridor. Nashipai noted the walls of the building which looked like a ruin that had been since forgotten. It’s only the office section where some renovations had been done.

‘With this kind of environment, you need to forget about good life," Na- shipai was thinking.

As she walked with her crew around the prison. She saw a group of pris- oners dressed in black and white stripped uniform. Some of the clothes looked oversize. At the far end was a group of prisoners busy with their rehabilitation activities; irrigating vegetables, tending to flowers and wash- ing the pavements.

This is the place, said the warder stopping near two stools

Thank you, let my team organize for the recording then we start. Mean- while, you can be fetching the prisoner for us. Nashipai said, looking at him in anticipation.

Right away, the warder said firmly and moistened his lips. He was very

    economical with his words.

After a short while, Monchari appeared from the kitchen section sand- wiched between two prison warders. His head was hairless like an egg and his eyes were sunken in the eye sockets. The feet were like two sticks hanging in the trouser. He had put on a pair of old plastic shoes.

There you go, the new warder said to Monchari.

Monchari walked slowly towards Nashipai. He seemed in high spirits that at last, he was going to get his justice.

    Nashipai greeted
