Chapter 1

n the late seventies and eighties, Spain for geographical reasons used to be one of the main gateways of drugs to Europe. African drugs that were mostly hashish, were smuggled in inflatable boats from Morocco over the Straits of Gibraltar, while South American cartels preferred to ship them to Galicia in the northwest of the country.
Galicia remained the best choice for South American dealers for several reasons. There were cultural and language affinities. The vast majority of Galicians were bilingual Galician or Spanish, and Galician was largely intelligible with Spanish. Family connections could be exploited easily.
In the eighties, there was a large reconversion of the traditional Galician fishing and shipbuilding industries. In addition, the western coast of Galicia known as the Riaz Baizas was incredibly rugged, the climate was very humid, rainy, and foggy, and it was right next to Portuguese territorial waters. All these factors conspired
to make West or South-west Galicia perfect for smuggling.
The criminal code was reformed accordingly in the mid-eighties though it was notable that drug possession of a small amount for one's use was not illegal, unlike in the USA.
It was the first day of the year, 1976. A boy was born to a humble family – Axel’ who was a truck driver and Sofia a homemaker. Their son Jorge Sanchez was born, and the couple did not have any further children, happily settled with one, Jorge was the apple of his parent’s eyes.
Axel Sanchez lived in the south of Spain in Aquilas, a city in south-eastern Spain. He sometimes took his wife Sofia and their son Jorge on his trips. His latest job was to transport 20,000 litres of sulfuric acid far up north to Sestao, a city in Spain’s autonomous Basque Country. Since Jorge finished the school year with good grades, his father promised that he could go along on the trip to Sestao. Sofia would also go to keep an eye on Jorge.
Jorge was a good student who enjoyed learning and school. He had a good relationship with his family and especially loved his maternal grandparents.

orge Sanchez was ten years old in 1986. He was a spirited young boy with black hair and dark brown eyes. He stood around 5’4 and weighed around 140 lbs. He had accompanied his father on short rides in the past but was keen to go to the Basque area of Spain after reading about it in school. Jorge’s father promised to take him on his next delivery to the region if Jorge made good grades. Jorge held up his end of the bargain.
Sofia and their son, Jorge Sanchez had never been to Madrid before and as her husband’s delivery was in that part of Spain, she decided to travel along with him, so that they have a good time together.
They were all excited about the trip and the next day they decided that on the way home, they would stop off to see the amazing scenery at the Somosierra mountain pass in the Sierra de Guadarrama north of Madrid in Spain. But fate would have a different plan.
On June 25, 1986, delivery to the Basque region came up – Axel was tasked with transporting 20,000 litres of sulfuric acid from Cartagena to Sestao. He, Sofia, and Jorge all hopped in the truck, ready to make the long journey together. The drive would take over eight hours, cover over 800 km (roughly 515 miles), and take the family through steep, narrow mountain passes.
The family had picked up the truck in the city of Cartagena around 7 PM. Perhaps because of broken brakes, Axel was speeding at this point at 140 km (86 mi) per hour. After the car he rear-ended got out of his way, Axel crashed head-on with a truck that had come down from the opposite direction.
The Volvo F-12 had earlier refueled near the
