    Acknowledgements

In the preparation of this book, I have consulted many eminent Islamic scholars, read books on Al Isra Wal Miraj, written by equally eminent scholars and these books are listed in the bibliography at the end. During the month of Rajab 1445, I have attended many lectures and listened to speeches in mosques and community centres by eminent Ulema-e-Karam, explaining and elaborating on this extraordinary celestial event.

The facts obtained from the Hadith regarding the night journey and the Quranic verses were thoroughly checked and reviewed by Hakeem Allama Muhammad Farooq, a T.V presenter and an eminent scholar based in the U.K

I take this opportunity of thanking everyone who has helped with the production of this book and pray that Allah SWT, through the good offices of his beloved Prophet (saw), bless them all.  As a retired scientist, I have collaborated with former colleagues and sought explanations and help in the minimal use of AI, with extensive editing where necessary; but any errors or omissions are mine alone.

    Foreword

    Al-Isra Wal Miraj

In the depths of human history, certain events stand as landmarks that point to the, importance of faith and mysticism in human life. Among these, the Isra and Miraj, the celestial night journey of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw), emerges as an enigmatic and profound event in Islam. This in-depth exploration embarks on a journey beyond the veil of tradition, seeking to illuminate the Isra and Miraj through the scientific inquiry. The story itself is a celestial journey, a miraculous night when the Prophet Muhammad (saw)ascended through the realms, traversing the heavens and conversing with Prophets and angels. It is an event so awe-inspiring and mystical that its contemplation has stirred the hearts of believers and seekers of truth for centuries. Yet, within this celestial voyage lies an opportunity for a harmonious convergence of faith and reason, spirituality and science.

There are a few books about al-Isra Wal Miraj, written by some eminent scholars but this book is unique, in that it boldly goes where no man has gone before – the author undertakes the difficult task of looking at the event from a scientific perspective; inviting readers to engage with the Isra and Miraj in a way that transcends the boundaries of conventional understanding. By scrutinizing the accounts of the event through scientific principles, the author embarks on a quest to reconcile the spiritual with the empirical. I do not think that the journey a reader follows in this book tries in any way to unravel the divine, for that remains beyond the grasp of human comprehension, but rather to explore the harmony between the sacred and the rational. Many theologians and scientists have often questioned the fusion of science and spirituality, and perceived it as an impossible act between opposing forces, but the journey of Isra and Miraj beckons us to consider a synthesis. This book does not attempt to strip away the deep reverence in which this celestial journey is held by over a billion followers; rather, it seeks to unveil the inherent beauty of this miraculous journey through the language of science. It is an invitation to contemplate the marvels of the universe and the metaphysical through the Islamic belief that nothing is impossible for God.

As the author delves deep into the scientific intricacies of the Isra and Miraj, he approaches the subject with humility, recognizing the limitations of human understanding in the face of the divine. In this exploration, the author takes us on a journey of intellectual curiosity, guided by the spirit of inquiry and the pursuit of knowledge. I pray that his effort, through the realms of faith and science, enriches our understanding of the Isra and Miraj, fostering a dialogue that transcends boundaries and unites the spiritual and the scientific realms for enlightenment.

I believe the author has done justice to the work at hand by applying scientific principles and Islamic knowledge to the facts contained in the Hadith and the Quran regarding the night journey. And in the final chapter, he has overseen the synthesis of science and faith and to a considerable extent, settled differences among Islamic scholars regarding the nature of the Miraj – whether it was a dream, or a physical ascension or both. And whether or not the holy Prophet (saw) saw his creator with his own eyes or not. May the Almighty accept his effort to explain and clarify many difficult aspects of this enigmatic journey.

    Introduction

Welcome, dear reader and seeker of truth, to a journey at the crossroads of faith and science, where we embark upon an exploration of one of the most profound narratives within Islamic history. Let me say at the outset that in this short book, it is not my wish to consider every aspect of the night journey in terms of science, but to explore possible relationship between science and faith and what this means for understanding this mysterious event. For many believers, no explanation or evidence is necessary for the journey to have taken place, because for them it is a matter of faith. But the night journey of the prophet Muhammad (saw), stands as an important event that integrates richness of religious belief with the rigour of scientific inquiry so that every seeker of truth may benefit from the knowledge that it imparts.  This book is, therefore, intended for those seekers of truth, who are fascinated by a fusion of spiritual experience and empirical understanding.

As stated above, at the heart of this exploration lies the journey of Isra Wal Miraj when the prophet Muhammad (saw) travelled from Makkah to Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem and then ascended through the seven universes, saw the realms of paradise and hell, met various prophets (peace be upon them all), and finally stood in the divine presence. It is an event that spans the intricacies of cosmic reality, challenging our
