he squawking of seagulls and the loud horn of a ship woke me up. I got up quickly and folded the cardboard I used as a bed.
Ranger! Call your friends! You have ten minutes to get ready!
One of the pier personnel told me to inform the other stevedores.
My friends were my age and were either abandoned by their families or forced to work at an early age, making us a close-knit group.
I washed my face in the terminal restrooms. I knew I should have had a bath, but I was in a hurry. Still, I didn’t think it mattered whether or not I smelled nice because it wouldn’t make me rich. But I was actually hoping it would.
It was 1994, and modernized ships were beginning to appear. However, the ship we were waiting to dock had a wooden hull with wooden balancers covering its sides. Perhaps the owner did not have the budget to modernize because their trading route was only to and from a three-hour-away island. I knew this since I tried to work for them several times and was always turned down. They did not hire me since I did not finish high school.
But I understood it was pointless to feel sorry for not finishing high school. It was
