This metaphysical science fiction story took inspiration from a wide variety of pop culture, from video games (like Smash Bros, Halo, Team Fortress 2, Fortnite and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon) to books (including stories by Philip K. Dick and Douglas Adams) and back to anime (such as Neon Genesis Evangelion and Desert Punk).
BATT-LE Colosseum resonates with those who struggle with relying on others, as Nina grapples with the choice of reducing what she's reliant on versus being comfortable in any situation, including being dependent on her teammate.

Welcome, Nina! Thanks for joining Thea's broadcast!
The BATT-LE armour with the broadcast bot that she had tapped into was on the ground, among other round mascot-shaped armours that were searching the frozen road between buildings.

said her armour's synthetic voiceover, this Commentary-Broadcaster-Bot has detected that the 'subjective_delay' variable of this broadcast has been set to—

The synth voice had a joyful cadence that reminded Nina of an old American western; she always disliked how the synth took notice of her to offer a personal greeting.
Members of the Vikings team had banded together. She had watched them recognize each other from the rest of the BATT-LE Colosseum players only by their plain purple tunics and their gold and silver viking helmets.
While she preferred dealing with a group of objects than with an individual and had little problem with being at the centre of a group, Nina always hated the unnerving singulating-out of the unification of their gaze.
Most of the short and stocky cartoon anthropomorphic forms were standing on high alert in the shade at the base of a submerged building; others, including the player Nina was spectating, climbed the snow dunes to peer with steady caution into broken windows across the street. 'Thea' was tan-colored and was working with other circular helmets with static dog and cat faces. Gusts of snow covered her footprints at once.
Thea is on the lookout for an opposing player—Look!
