Introduction
Brief overview of the book's purpose
Living with Adult Autism: A Guide for Autistic Adults and Their Families
is intended to provide a comprehensive resource to navigate the complexities of adult autism. The book aims to demystify autism spectrum disorder (ASD), debunk common misconceptions, and offer practical guidance for living and thriving with ASD.
Our purpose is two-fold. Firstly, we aim to empower autistic adults with strategies to manage daily life, build successful relationships, establish fulfilling careers, and maintain physical and mental wellbeing. Secondly, we strive to provide families, friends, and caregivers with insights and tools to support their autistic loved ones effectively.
This guide emphasizes the importance of self-acceptance, self-advocacy, and the pursuit of individual strengths and passions. It stands as an affirmation that living with autism is not about 'overcoming' or 'fixing' oneself but about understanding and embracing one's unique neurology. By fostering greater understanding and acceptance of adult autism, we hope to contribute to a world where neurodiversity is valued and respected.
Personal experience
"From as early as I can remember, I always felt somewhat different. I noticed details others didn’t, found social situations overwhelming, and struggled with changes in routines. I loved routine, predictability, and had my own unique interests that I could obsess over for hours. But these traits also isolated me from my peers and even from my own family. It wasn't until my adulthood that I finally understood why – I was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
Getting the diagnosis was a revelation and a relief. Suddenly, parts of my life that had been confusing started making sense. I finally understood why I felt and behaved differently. It was not something wrong with me but a part of who I am – I am autistic, and that is okay.
However, accepting the diagnosis wasn't easy. It took me time to embrace my autism, and it required a lot of self-exploration and acceptance. I had to unlearn many of the stereotypes and stigmas I had internalized about autism and realize that being autistic is just another way of experiencing the world.
In the journey that followed, I learned to navigate the challenges of social interactions, manage sensory overload, and found strategies that helped me thrive in the workplace. I started advocating for my needs and rights and educating others about autism.
My journey of self-discovery and acceptance inspired me to help others going through similar experiences. This book is a product of that journey, a tool I wish I'd had when I first received my diagnosis. My hope is that by sharing my experience and the strategies I've learned, I can provide comfort, guidance, and practical assistance to other autistic adults and their loved ones."
