Chapter 1

The Call of the Lighthouse

Sam Jennings stood at the bow of the ferry, the cold sea spray misting his face as he watched the shoreline approach. The remote island, a silhouette against the fading light of dusk, loomed ahead, its towering lighthouse piercing the sky. A sense of foreboding mingled with his anticipation. He had left behind the clamor and chaos of city life, drawn by a job posting that promised solitude and simplicity as a lighthouse keeper. Back in the cottage, Sam prepared a simple meal, the silence of the island a stark contrast to the life he had left behind. As he ate, he pondered Captain Harris's words. What had he meant by the island changing people?
