Preface
In the tapestry of existence, there are threads of wisdom woven by ancient cultures, whispered through generations, and carried across oceans. These threads, often hidden from the mainstream narratives, hold within them the profound secrets of the cosmos. This book, Walking Wisdoms,
is a journey into one such realm of wisdom, where the teachings of the Bakongo people, their Cosmogram, and their profound impact on diverse cultures are unveiled.
Imagine my father passing down wisdom to me, a timeless message that transcends generations. Son,
he says, "The two closest things on earth are the teeth and the tongue, and even those two get out of sync sometimes.
But this book is not just about a father’s teachings; it’s about the enduring wisdom of the Bakongo people, a vibrant and ancient culture whose influence stretches far beyond the borders of their homeland. It’s about the Bakongo Cosmogram, a symbol that encapsulates a universe of knowledge, and how it has touched the lives of Native American communities. It’s about the undeniable parallels between the Bakongo Cosmogram and the Native American Medicine Wheel, a testament to the interconnectedness of humanity’s collective wisdom.
The story goes deeper as we delve into the powerful impact of Bakongo culture, religion, and the Cosmogram on African American communities in the United States. The Kongo cosmogram, introduced by enslaved Bakongo people during the trans-Atlantic slave trade, found a home in the hearts of Black Americans. It adorned the walls of church basements and was etched into pottery, a silent but potent reminder of heritage, resilience, and unity.
Yet, this book is more than an exploration of symbology and cultural exchange. It’s a spotlight on history, revealing the rich tapestry of Bakongo culture and the enduring legacy of their cosmological wisdom. Ethnohistorical sources and material culture offer evidence of the Kongo cosmogram’s existence before European contact and its continuous use in Central Africa into the twentieth century. This sacred symbol encapsulated the essence of the Kongo people, a metaphoric representation of their place within the cosmos.
As we embark on this journey, we must also acknowledge the shadows that mar the story. The Democratic Republic of Congo, a land with a painful history of conflict and ethnic cleansing, bears witness to the endurance of its people. This book is a call to shine a light on their plight, to remember the resilience of the human spirit even in the face of unimaginable suffering.
In Walking Wisdoms,
we unearth the ancient wisdom of the Bakongo people, illuminating the hidden corners of history, culture, and spirituality. It’s a tapestry woven with love, unity, and the enduring search for meaning in the vast cosmos. May this exploration inspire you, dear reader, to seek deeper, to appreciate the threads that connect us all, and to cherish the secrets of the cosmos that lie within our shared humanity.

Kongo Cosmogram
The Kongo Cosmogram was introduced in the Americas by enslaved Bakongo people in the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Archaeological findings in the United States show evidence that the symbol was honored by Black Americans, who drew the Kongo Cosmogram on the walls of church basements, as
