Alarm clocks - You probably have more than one, including that old wind up one that you don’t know where it came from! Why do we have them? How do we use them? Why do we not like them?

We have alarm clocks because we must sleep to rest our minds and bodies. If we are very tired, or ill, we might not wake up in time to do something important.

I think most of us use them to remind us of something: like we have an important appointment (making it to work or school on time.) We might even use one for cooking, so that our food is not burned to a crisp or raw and inedible.

How we use them is interesting. We set the alarm for a certain time to wake us that will allow us to get ready for an appointment. But there is this funny button on most alarm clocks or alarm radios: the snooze button. Now, I have no idea why you would want to ignore the alarm when it is telling you that you need to get up for something important. Some alarms allow you to hit the snooze button over and over again!

And then there is that annoying noise! No one could stay asleep with that racket! Which is precisely the idea. You see, we need warnings that will rouse us from sleep or distractedness because we are fallible humans.

This book is a brief look at why we humans (and Christians are human beings, too) are in desperate need of a wake-up call. You see, time is short, just as it is when the alarm clock goes off. We may have time to make it safely, but there could be something lurking out there (like rain or a distracted driver) that will make getting to our appointment on time or safely an impossibility.

In this book, we will be considering what God has to say about sleep and rest (the spiritual kind), watchfulness, alarms of various kinds, hitting the snooze button, and appointments of the divine nature. It is my hope that this will be a kind of alarm book that sets you to thinking about your spiritual relationship with the Creator. And I purposely did not put a snooze button on it.

    Wake Up

¹ And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write, These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead. ² Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God. ³ Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee. ⁴ Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy. ⁵ He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before
