Creating a More-Than-Enough Retirement
I grew up the poorest kid in a rich neighborhood.
I was raised by my mother, a single parent who struggled to control her finances. Based on her income, we should have lived in impoverished circumstances, but we were able to live in Anaheim Hills, California, thanks to my grandfather, who had property there.
I’m grateful for that opportunity, but there was a downside to that lucky break. I grew up seeing prosperity from the outside. Everyone I knew had more than enough of everything. None of them worried about paying their bills each month or where their next meal would come from. I lived in a town of more-than-enough luxury, and that made it far clearer how much I lacked.
Escaping to a World of Travel and Discovery
I vowed that I’d pull myself out of that situation at the very first opportunity, and I did just that. After college, I took the first job I could get that would give me a chance to make money and experience independence, see the world, and enjoy some of what I’d missed in childhood.
I started doing financial analysis for a worldwide importer-exporter. Over the next five years, I traveled to 22 countries and worked with some of the biggest companies in the world. I was making money and living the life of luxury I had yearned for — but it wasn’t fulfilling. I enjoyed the lifestyle, but the work left me cold.
I wanted a home. I wanted to start a family. And, just as importantly, I realized I wanted to do something that would give my work meaning. I wanted to make sure other people didn’t have to look at more than enough from the outside.
I decided I would help people so they wouldn’t have to experience in their retirement what I experienced as a child.
A Whole World in My Backyard
Settling into a home and my new career wasn’t hard at all. Home, for me, continues to be Southern California, one of the greatest places in the world.
A whole world of cultures and experiences has been crammed into this beautiful corner of the country. In a single day, I may spend a couple of hours in the morning with an Indian family, learning about their lives and culture and then meet a Filipino family at lunch. I may coach a Spanish couple in the afternoon and speak with an African American couple right before dinner.
Who needs to travel abroad when you can experience so much with your neighbors?
What’s more, in each of these interactions, I’m able to help empower these families to turn their retirement into the adventure of their dreams. Instead of having to live out their best years seeing everyone else thrive while they just try to survive, they can retire on their terms, when and how they want. It’s the most fulfilling work imaginable.
The Cost of Ignorance
My work is fulfilling, precisely because people need it so desperately. So many people have no idea what retirement will look like because they don’t understand the finances behind it.
When can they retire? How far will their pensions take them? Should they roll everything over as a lump sum or get a monthly check?
Miguel and Maria, whom you’ll meet later in the book, didn’t even know if they could get Social Security. That may seem unbelievable to you. But I encounter similar situations all too often.
Many people don’t ever really think about these questions until they are staring straight at retirement. And that ignorance of what is ahead can be costly.
That was the case with two of my recent clients, Luiz and Jeanine, who came to me through a recommendation. I had helped their neighbor, Dan, achieve one of those more-than-enough retirements everyone is looking for, and they wanted to know if they could do the same.
I spoke to them at length, took notes, and did all the analysis on their finances. Unfortunately, I had to deliver bad news. Because they had waited too long to focus on retirement, they were looking at a $20,000 annual shortfall. They had less than enough, and they would have to work for another four years to make up the deficit. Otherwise, they’d have to accept some sacrifices to their lifestyle.
It’s devastating for me to have to break that news to anyone, but it’s better to hear the truth than make the wrong choice out of ignorance. At least Luiz and Jeanine were now in a position to make better decisions and course-correct their retirement. When they do retire, they will have more than enough because they talked to me.
For now, though, the news isn’t great. That’s why I refused to charge them a cent. I believe I should provide value before I charge anything. No one needs to spend a lot of money to hear that their dreams can’t come true today. I don’t believe in taking money from people who are struggling. I know how it feels to struggle, and I’m not going to pile on.
Making Retirement Dreams Come True
Luckily, Luiz and Jeanine’s story is rare. Usually, I find a way to help, as I did for Mark and Sylvia.
They walked into my office and bluntly said, We want to retire, but we have no idea what we’re doing. We’re both 63 years old, we have some retirement assets, and we both have pensions, but we have no idea if that’s enough.
I couldn’t give them an answer right away. To find out if they had enough, I had to know what enough
meant for them. We talked for an hour about their goals and how much they would need to live out retirement on their
