Preface
The air was thick with the smell of yesterday's gravy as I joined the end of the lunch queue, my stomach twisting in preemptive disgust. School lunches were notoriously bad, but in recent weeks they had taken a turn for the worse, the daily menu a gauntlet of culinary despair.
Each step forward brought a deeper sense of dread. At the front of the line, the pudding station seemed to exude a chill that contrasted starkly with the steam and sizzle from the other trays. The lunch lady there was an eerie figure, her eyes strange beacons behind the foggy lenses of her glasses, shimmering with unnatural colors that seemed out of place in the fluorescent-lit cafeteria.
Her skin was pallid, almost translucent, stretched over her skeletal frame. Her presence alone was enough to make the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end, and I found my steps faltering as I approached her station.
Reluctantly, I held out my tray, and with a motion that seemed too deliberate, she ladled a dollop of brown, quivering pudding onto it. The surface of the pudding was a shifting morass.

she croaked, a smile splitting her face, revealing a row of stained teeth. The sing-song quality of her voice belied an undercurrent of malice. With a jolt of revulsion, I managed to get away from her, hastening to the nearest trash bin to rid
