      I still couldn’t believe it was happening to me. Things like this just don’t.

      Do they?

      But I was pretty sure that the bitch standing across the room from me planned to kill me, so whether it was really happening or not was something way less than moot at the present time.

      The aforementioned bitch held up her right hand, splayed her long scrawny fingers, and I could see the lines of force surrounding her dozen or so rings in a bright blue-green aureole that radiated up and outward. The force lines—I don’t know what else to call them--hit the stone ceiling above and disappeared into it. A crackling, buzzing sound permeated the dusty air, a sound too low to actually hear, but I could feel it in my teeth and bones, a deep dull ache that was almost impossible to bear.

      The aureole grew above and around her, expanding to cover her like a glowing shield.
