The grand library of Carmichael University was abuzz, filled with professors, alumni, and bibliophiles browsing first editions and placing silent bids. I took in the familiar surroundings, comforted by the smell of aged paper as I navigated the maze of oak shelves.
It had been years since I stepped foot in any hallowed hall of literature, though somehow it still felt like home. I was here tonight to support the university’s charity auction, definitely not because I was pathetically dateless on Valentine’s weekend.
No, I refused to dwell on my abysmal track record with love. How many times had my heart led me astray? First there was timid Thomas, who couldn’t even work up the nerve to kiss me. Then came fickle Fabian who left me for an old flame. Followed by playboy Paolo who...well, the less said about that disaster, the better.
And now, ghosting Wesley. I sighed, resentment rising in my chest. Would I ever find someone capable of genuine connection? At 23, watching friends revel in casual flings and transient romances, I couldn’t help but feel alone on my solitary path. My girlfriends scoffed at the idea of settling down, content with fleeting passion and playing the field. But in my heart, I longed for lasting love, someone to share my dreams and walk beside me. Wesley was just another failed attempt, reinforcing my creeping fear that I was destined to wander alone. But I couldn’t lose hope. Somewhere out there was a soul longing to find mine. I just had to hold on to faith that when the time was right, our stars would align.
But I was determined not to let melancholy ruin my evening. Tonight I would bask in literary splendor, enjoying the company of fellow book lovers. Romance could wait.
Shaking off my gloom, I turned down an aisle of ornate encyclopedias only to collide headlong with a complete stranger. Books tumbled from the shelves as I stumbled backwards. Strong hands grasped my shoulders, keeping me from falling further.
Good heavens! Are you alright?
a refined voice asked. I looked up, an apology on my lips, and found myself staring into an arrestingly familiar pair of hazel eyes.
Though this gentleman exuded sophistication, his eyes sparked with humor. Something about his gaze struck a chord, yet I couldn’t quite grasp why. He seemed to recognize me instantly, while I wracked my brain trying to place him.
Had we crossed paths before? His face tugged at hazy memories, obscured by the passage of time. Perhaps a chance encounter forgotten long ago? I took in his athletic build, his air of refined confidence. No, I would have remembered this polished, magnetic man.
Yet his eyes gazed into mine with such familiar warmth. I sifted through faces from my past, searching for his. A long lost relative? An old family friend? The possibilities swirled as I struggled to unlock the mystery of this handsome stranger.
Professor Montague! You look...
I hesitated, his identity suddenly clicking into place. This was my favorite literature professor from university. I flashed back to those early days - sitting engrossed in the front row as he lectured passionately about
