Chapter 1
One Moment Is All
It Takes
Taking her phone out from her new, monogrammed purse, a graduation gift in anticipation of her new job, Aleyna saw it was her mother’s face flashing on the screen. Excusing herself from her friends, she answered the call.
"Mum, you have good timing! We were just planning a short retreat for a couple of days next week, before we all get busy! Cool if I go, yes?’
She grew silent as her mother spoke, her face a rollercoaster of emotions, moving from disbelief to helplessness.. to a stunned abyss of doom.
All she could do was follow her mother’s instructions step by step- get in a cab and reach Memorial Hospital immediately.
A hundred thoughts kept flashing in her head on the ride over- How could something like this happen to her dad? Why? She could not imagine him in a hospital bed.. would there be tubes sticking out from his body? What if he does not live, just like her friend, Sia’s dad who passed away from a heart attack? NO Aleyna, do not even think such horrible things. He’s going to be up and fine in time for her to go away on a trip with her friends. Wow, how could she even imagine going on a vacation when something like this has happened, this made her such a horrible person..
She reached the hospital in a daze, trepidation rising by the sterile scent and clinical white walls.. but nothing could have prepared her for the sight of her father lying unconscious attached to various machines with her mother sitting sobbing beside him.
Holding on to her mother, she understood that there were words being thrown at her.. her mother recounting how it happened.. but all she could feel was grief, at seeing her father- her source and pillar of strength reduced to the mercy of others, lying in a hospital gown with his mouth partly open, eyes forcibly closed.

Chapter 2
Changing Times
‘Don’t lose hope, he’ll come out of it, it’s what the doctors are saying.’
‘Mom, the doctors also said that full-body paralysis is the worst one to recover from, if at all. Can you please accept that he’s completely bedridden and Is going to require more than just hope to get out of it?’
"Aleyna, try to be patient, what has happened to your father is.. ‘
How, Mom? How can you ask me to be patient, it’s been almost a month we are here at the hospital, my friends have started with their jobs, we are taking Dad home today in almost the same condition he was brought here in.. and you are asking me to be patient?
‘You need to stop acting like a teenager, making everything about yourself!’
‘And you need to stop acting like a weak person for whom crying is the only solution to each problem!
The air, thick with tension, palpable enough to be sliced with a knife, hung heavy around them, interjected only with the sounds of the oxygen
