    Hildr sensed the presence of all the minds around her. Even from within her home of timber and stone, behind barred doors, she felt their minds. Though she couldn’t read them, she knew of their presence, their proximity. After all, they were her people, her responsibility. Who else would take care of them? And more importantly, who else could take care of them?

    She rose from an ornately carved chair in front of the hearth, reluctant to leave the warmth of the flames, but just as Hildr had come to know the daily comings and goings of Hrafnheimr, she’d also grown familiar with the patterns of their collective emotions. Unlike the widely known stories of witches casting spells that would transform people into toads and curse their families for generations, Hildr’s witchcraft was a power of the mind, of the soul. And the emotion among nearly all of the villagers this morning was fear.

    Embracing the bite of winter’s cold, she pulled her heavy wool cloak tight and stepped into the freshly fallen snow.

    Milady! a nearby villager said.

    She couldn’t recall his name, but he reached out to her as he approached, taking her hand. She felt not just the warmth of his gloved hand, but the essence of his mind. A name reached the confines of her mind.

    Anders, she replied, with as much warmth as she could conjure into her voice. What news do you have for me this day?

    Forgive me, Madam Hildr, but I’m afraid the Ashenwraith are gathering again. He paused as if preparing for Hildr to react. But despite her frustration, she maintained her composure. It was best for the people, after all. Anders went on, And there are more than the last time as well. It’s as if some gateway has been opened and the Ashenwraith are simply pouring in.

    Do not fear, Anders, Hildr said, squeezing his hand. I will ensure Hrafnheimr remains safe for all of us. You have my word.
