    Introduction

Get ready for dragon fire and fierce competition in Iron Flame, the second book in The Empyrean Series by Rebecca Yarros! This fantasy adventure picks up where the first book left off, following Violet Sorrengail as she trains to become a dragon rider at the mysterious Basgiath War College. But this isn't your average school; it's filled with grueling trials and dark secrets, making Violet wonder who she can trust.

Violet may not be the strongest or fastest, but she has a clever mind and a will of iron. She'll need all of that to survive the brutal training and face off against a new vice commandant who seems determined to break her. Can Violet uncover the hidden truths about the war against evil magic users known as venin, and will she choose loyalty or follow her own moral compass? Plus, throw in a touch of forbidden romance, and you've got a recipe for an epic adventure!

This series is perfect for fans of magic, dragons, and strong female characters. If you're looking for a thrilling read with a mix of action, romance, and mystery, Iron Flame will take you on a wild ride!

    Just remember:

Iron Flame is part of a bestselling series written by romance queen Rebecca Yarros that hit the top of the charts in the New York Times, USA Today, and many more!

This book is the second in a series, so it's best to read the first one, Fourth Wing, before diving in.

    Plot Summary

Iron Flame picks up right after the events that concluded the Fourth Wing. In the prior book, there was an attack by Venin (users of dark magic) on the Athebyne military base during the War Games held at Basgiath War College. Following this, Violet is recovering from her injuries in Aretia, a town in the Tyrrendor Province of the kingdom of Navarre. In just the past three days, Violet's world has been turned upside down. Xaden Riorson, the third-year student she has fallen for, is part of a rebellion that was thought to have ended years ago. Some of Violet's fellow students who survived Athebyne with her are also part of this rebellion. Additionally, Violet's brother Brennan, who she assumed had died fighting the rebels six years prior, is actually alive and leading the rebellion. The venin, wielders of dark magic who can draw power from the earth and ride wyverns that they create and control, are real, despite only being characters in Violet's father's stories. They are intent on killing everyone on the Continent. The leadership of Navarre has carefully concealed all of this information and removed it from history in order to protect its citizens within the protective magic wards of the kingdom, which keep the venin out.

Brennan and Xaden choose to keep Violet unaware of the rebellion's details until she can properly utilize her magic to create a mental shield that blocks out her former friend, Dain Aetos, who can read memories. Violet distances herself from Xaden until he agrees to be fully transparent with her. Andarna, one of the two dragons bonded to Violet, is brought to the Vale to undergo the Dreamless Sleep, a critical process in which young dragons mature into adults, while Violet, Xaden, and their peers return to Basgiath College to graduate. Colonel Aetos, who previously sent them into danger after Dain stole Violet's memories, now threatens the lives of their family and friends if they tell anyone about the venin. Dain unsuccessfully tries to reconcile with Violet, oblivious to what truly occurred in Athebyne and the depth of his betrayal. After graduation, Xaden is stationed at the border outpost of Samara, while Violet remains at Basgiath.
