How To Create A Realistic Character - Kelli Hamsher
HOW TO CREATE A BELIEVABLE CHARACTER
INTRODUCTION
Readers love characters, their reactions, their demeanor, their strengths, their weaknesses. Readers attach to characters, get to know characters. The plot counts, but the character counts more. Readers love characters they can relate to, feel for, understand, or just love. A plot takes the reader on the characters journey. A journey of emotions the reader feels, and if written well, It's a journey they can’t walk away from, meaning they will read your entire book and wait for your next.
Readers become engaged if they can predict a character’s reactions. This comes by making sure the characters reactions consistently fit their personality and the situations of the plot. Even if there’s a change in demeanor from an incident, say personal loss or a failure, the character will still retain some core qualities, the things that make them who they are. They may have been outgoing, then the incident happens, and they refuse to leave their house. This happens a lot with character journeys, their arc, their growth, and change, they fall and rise, but the core reactions, their core traits will remain unchanged.
That’s why it’s important for writers to know their characters inside and out. It also helps the writer know what situations are right for different characters, the dilemmas that bring out the characters personality and how to bring about the change, or growth in a way that engages the reader.
Knowing your characters inside and out will help you, the writer create the best plots. If you’re unsure of your characters reactions before you write the scene, you take a chance on not portraying him as a real, believable character. The reader will notice, or they will become confused, increasing the chances of them becoming bored and walking away.
