About this ebook

ISBN: 978-3-7554-0996-0

Welcome to the perspicuous edition of Social Policy and Development. This easy-to-understand edition is a recommended must-have for every student of social policy. This book delivers a quick insight into the basics of social policy, planning, allied development, and the currents affairs of the subject.

Social policy is a practical subject. It aids in understanding the systemic role of community builders and social workers in building a welfare state and the process of obliteration of social evils. It equips the learner to gain insight into the international efforts to tackle social upheavals.

Though poverty eradication is an ideal goal, it is still a much worked-upon goal. Poverty alleviating shibboleths such as philanthropy, social service schemes, social reforms, reformative policies, etc, seem fatuous yielding exiguous results. This book will help students conclude on the anomalies in the field of the social service sector that can be regulated with strategic partnerships and ethic-infused prioritized channelization of resources and appropriately devised practical social policies.

Much has been done in the past and much is still being done. The question remains would we reach an ideal place of social perfection? That remains a question till this decade, and it seems to me that it will always remain a question!

    Social Policy – Meaning

At the outset, what is the policy?

"The general principles by which a government is guided in its management of public affairs, or the legislature in its measures.

This term, as applied to a law, ordinance, or rule of law, denotes its general purpose or tendency considered as directed to the POLICY."-(Black's Law Dictionary Free Online Legal Dictionary 2nd Ed).

    What Is Social policy?

Author Paul Spiker opined that: "Social Policy is the study of social services and the welfare state. In general terms, it looks at the idea of social welfare, and its relationship to politics and society. More specifically, it also considers:

Policy and administration of social services, including policies for health, housing, income maintenance, education, and social work.

Needs and issues affecting the users of services, including poverty, old age, health, disability, and family policy; and

    The delivery of welfare."

    AIM OF SOCIAL POLICY:

The aim of social policy is that everyone in society lives in peace and harmony without conflicts. In addition, it assures the development of society by uplifting the marginal class and providing them with the basics of quality living, such as free education, old-age pension schemes, unemployment benefits, the low-interest rate for housing loans, etc.

    THE DIMENSIONS:

Social policy has grown to promote human welfare at a broader level taking into consideration the development dimensions in different parts of the world depending on political, economic, and environmental factors. Social Policy may be observed and
