I need another week, I begged. The cure was so close. I could feel it. It lied beyond my fingertips and if I reached a little harder it would be within my grasp. The last combination proved to have the best results with the rats. Why couldn’t they see it?

We’ve given you enough time and resources as it is, the voice comes over the phone with a tone of finality.

My heart dropped. They couldn’t stop the progress we already made. Not now. Not when it matters the most. My oath to help others crawled along my spine at the very real fear of the federal government shutting this project down. My brow began to perspire as I stumbled through the chaos of my mind to find the right words to say to convince them that all I needed was another week.

This cure would not only save millions in the population, it could revolutionize everything we’ve gone through over the centuries. We would finally be able to create vaccines that would lower the mortality rate. That alone should emphasize the importance of this discovery coming into fruition. Just one more week, I beg of you!

An exasperated sigh comes through the speaker. I can already mentally imagine the person on the other line pinching their brows but there were bigger things at stake than annoyance and aggravation. After all, wasn’t that the exact reason why they put me on this project—why they begged for months.

Oh, how the tables have turned. They prized me for my stubbornness and relentlessness of pursuit for a solution and penalized me for the exact same thing.

Another sigh comes through the speaker. I’ll tell you what. You got three days. I’ll try to hold them off on this end, but your ass needs to be out of that facility and all your animals removed in three days. You got that? Don’t make me regret this, Dr. Ascher. We’ve lost a lot of time and resources already. How many dead animals have he had to cover for you? Three. Days.
