BEFORE YOU BEGIN
Illustration HOW TO TAKE YOUR MEASUREMENTS
The designs featured in this book are sized for 10–12-year-olds and are loose-fitting. To shorten, lengthen, or make smaller, you'll need to measure yourself using a tape measure.
Add ¾ (2 cm) to your full hip measurement for a straight skirt, 2
(5 cm) to your chest measurement for a close-fitting top, and 1 ½ (4 cm) to your high hip measurement. Don't forget to add ⅜
(1 cm) for seams and between ⅜–¾" (1–2 cm) for hems!
1. Shoulders: measure from shoulder to shoulder.
2. Chest: measure chest circumference, under your arms.
3. Waist: measure just above your belly button.
4. High Hip: measure 2" (5 cm) below your belly button.
5. Full Hip: measure at your widest point (i.e., around your butt).
6. Arm Length: measure from shoulder to wrist.
7. Shoulder Length: measure from the base of your neck to your shoulder.
8. Skirt Length: measure from 2" (5 cm) below your belly button (if you like a low waist) to mid-thigh, knee, calf, etc., depending on the length you want.
IllustrationKEY
Each project is rated on a scale of 1–3 to indicate its difficulty level.
IllustrationIllustrationYOU WILL NEED:
•A pair of sewing scissors. Only use them to cut fabric. If you cut other things with them, they won't cut as well.
•A box of pins.
•Sewing thread.
•A ruler.
•A square for precise right angles.
•A sewing chalk pencil; the marks will disappear in the wash.
•A wooden stick (like a chopstick); ideal for reversing corners without damaging them.
•A tape measure for sewing.
•A thread cutter.
•Sewing glue stick.
Illustration CHOOSING THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT
SEWING MACHINE
Most of the designs are made using a sewing machine. The Singer MC1507 sewing machine is ideal for young dressmakers and beginners.
Helpful Hint: For a prettier finish, you can use metallic thread (silver, gold, etc.). Just use polyester thread in the bobbin and the metallic thread for sewing. Sew on the right side of the fabric!
