    LESSON 1

    Direct supervision and indirect supervision

A dental assistant’s role is often defined by their direct supervisor and the regulations set by their state’s dental board. Here’s an explanation of direct supervision and indirect supervision, along with the duties that a dental assistant (DA) and a Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) can perform:

    1. Direct Supervision: In the context of dental assisting, direct supervision means that a licensed dentist is present in the office and is physically present during the procedure. Under direct supervision, a DA or RDA can perform a wider range of duties, including:

    – Assisting the dentist during procedures, such as handing instruments, operating suction, or holding materials.

    – Taking and developing dental X-rays under the dentist’s instruction.

    – Preparing and sterilizing instruments and equipment.

    – Providing patient education and post-operative instructions.

    – Conducting preliminary oral assessments or screenings.

    2. Indirect Supervision: Indirect supervision means that a licensed dentist has given authorization but does not need to be physically present while the dental assistant performs certain tasks. The specific duties that can be performed under indirect supervision may vary depending on state regulations. Some common duties that can be performed under indirect supervision include:

    – Placing and removing rubber dams.

    – Placing and removing matrix bands.

    – Placing and removing temporary restorations.

    – Placing and removing periodontal dressings.

It’s important for dental assistants to work within their scope of practice and follow the guidelines provided by their state’s dental board. While it’s understandable that some doctors may ask you to perform tasks outside of your scope, it’s essential to prioritize patient safety and adhere to legal and ethical boundaries.
