CHAPTER 1: MEET UP & BREAK UP

Phone and alarm blaring. Karan groans, sluggishly throws off the covers, silences the alarm, and answers the call from his beloved Sadhana.

Hey there, Karan says.

Still in dreamland? Sadhana asks.

Yeah, I’ve been a bit lazy, Karan admits. Exams are done and I have a whole month before starting at the new office. Not much to do except eat, sleep, relax, and repeat.

Sadhana takes charge of the conversation. Listen, let’s meet at our usual spot at noon, she suggests.

Is there something special? Karan asks eagerly.

I don’t have much time, Sadhana hurriedly replies. I’ll tell you when we meet up today.

Sadhana waits in the restaurant lounge as Karan arrives. He grins and joins her at the table, picking up the menu to order.

Sadhana starts the conversation. Listen, I need you to listen very carefully and not interrupt me until I’m done. Can you do that?

Karan senses something unusual in her tone and timing, so he simply nods in agreement. As Karan turns to the waiter to place his order, Sadhana grabs his hand and says, I said listen! This time, there is a hint of anger in her voice, but Karan notices the tears in her eyes.

Now he focuses his attention on her and asks, Hey... are you okay? He tries to gently touch her chin, but she unexpectedly moves away, avoiding his touch, and continues speaking.

Listen, my dad just got promoted to commissioner of police. He received the official order today. The posting is in Mysore.

Wow! Congratulations! Are you crying because you must move to another city? Come on! Mysuru is only 150 kilometers away from here, just a 2-hour drive. Give me a call, and I will come over. But wait, what about the job offer you had from the campus? Karan questions.
