About this ebook

My father wanted an Alpha as heir. He had me, the surviving 'female' twin. He had no way to achieve his goal other than choosing a mate for me instead of waiting for a possible 'unsuitable' fated mate.
My eighteenth birthday arrived and so did the time of maturity for mating. A visit with a witch changed the odds in my favour.

With my father dead and my uncle ruling as Alpha in my stead, it was time for me to resume my rightful place. But finding my fated mate changed the order of things. How could I claim her if I wasn't an Alpha yet and how can I save her if I can't mate her? A visit with a witch offered the perfect solution.

Waking His Mate - Tiny Sparks

    Chapter One

    Nathalie

Groaning at the squabbling of Mother and Father, I detoured and tiptoed to the kitchen instead of the dining room.

A smile erased the frown on Carlo's face when he noticed me. A man of few words, he motioned me to the stove where he flipped a pancake and stirred a pan of scrambled eggs at the same time. The scent of pancakes had me almost blindly running into the dining room. Thankfully, my hearing had stopped me in time.

Any syrup in the kitchen left? Normally it would be on the buffet, but I'd eat my pancakes plain if it meant avoiding the heated discussion.

Carlo grunted and pointed to a small carafe. He dropped a pancake, scrambled eggs, and crispy bacon on a plate then handed it to me. I flopped onto the only chair in the kitchen and dug into my food after liberally covering it in the syrup.

Morning, Batista, Beta of our pack yawned.

Monin, I answered around a mouth full of pancakes.

You could try swallowing before speaking. He raised an eyebrow but a crooked smile softened the admonishment.

Avoiding the Alpha as well? I asked, licking the delicious bacon fat mixed with sweetness off my fingers.

He shook his head and winced when the argument in the room next door rose in volume. Our werewolf hearing already sensitive was assaulted with the roaring of my father and the near shrieking of my mother. I tried to avoid listening in, but when I heard my name, my ears perked up.

She'll have three fucking choices, how is that not good enough? my dad yelled, pounding the table. Anyone else would be terrified by his rising anger. Not my mom, Luna of the pack.

If one of them is her mate, it's great, she snapped.

And if not? Dad's voice was a low growl, daring her to contradict his verdict.

She won't be forced to mate with anyone but her true mate, Mom challenged him.

She will do what I damn well order! A plate crashed.

I will not allow it, Mom growled as loud as Dad.

I winced and glanced at Batista. His head was bent over his plate, his knuckles white from gripping the kitchen island.

I hadn't been aware of the ultimatum my father planned to put in front of me. My stomach clenched at the possibility of not finding my true mate. How would I cope with a forced mating? How could Father even think it? He was a fair Alpha, but never much of a father. Politics were more important than family, and this proved it again.

    Would he go this far?

The deathly silence after my mother's announcement had me fearing for her life. As Alpha, my father wouldn’t get challenged unless you have a death wish.

I got up, but Batista grabbed my arm and shook his head.

She's fine; he won't hurt her, he whispered.

Unlike me, huh, I whispered back.

His shoulders dropped, and with a defeated sigh, he nodded.

Guess I'll have to hope one of the chosen three is my true mate. I huffed.

My eighteenth birthday party wouldn’t be the happy affair I’d been made to believe.

With chagrin, I slammed my plate in the sink. When Carlo growled, I apologized. He was a gentle soul until you mess with his kitchen.

Barely holding my tears back, I ran outside, and let my wolf take over. She wasn't happy with the Alpha but didn't think he'd go through with it—such innocence. Wait until tomorrow, I told her. She shrugged and took off into the forest. I blissfully let her take over my mind and body.

It wasn’t a very long run but the wind in our fur and the fresh air gave me some peace. I arrived at the cottage and changed back.

To what do I owe the pleasure, Nathalie? Grandma handed me my comfy leggings and sweater.

Grandma, do I need to have a reason to visit? I hugged her.

Hardly, but something seems to be on your mind. She squinted when she held me at arm's length.

Father has the idea that I need an Alpha mate, I sighed, Guess I'm not enough for the pack.

Grandma puttered around in the kitchen and put the kettle on while I took a seat at the small kitchen table. The morning sun brightened the yellow cupboards in the kitchen. My focus changed from the dust particles in the rays of sunshine to the cup and plate of muffins placed in front of me.

She sat across and glared. Spill, she ordered.

I overheard him telling Mom that he'll only invite wolves who he sees fit as my mate, and if none turn out to be fated, he will order me to choose. I jumped when Grandma slammed the table with her fist, rattling our cups.

That son of mine is an idiot. He almost didn't find his fated mate! Her growl and the orange flecks in her eyes showed how close her wolf was. She might be gray and wrinkled, but my grandma and her wolf weren’t to be disregarded. She’d been the pack Luna after all.

What happened? I'd never heard this story. Only Mom telling me it was love at first sight because of the fated bond.

That's not a story for me to tell. She held up her hand and shook her head. You'll need to ask your mom.

What does it mean to choose a mate? And why would someone do it if there's a perfect mate for us out there? I’d never do it. If Father ordered me, I'd go rogue.

Normally, a chosen mate is preferred to no mate. Some wait a long time before deciding to take one, mostly to avoid moon madness. She stood to pour the boiled water into the teapot. "One other reason is when a fated mate passes away, and provided the surviving wolf doesn't
