About this ebook
Twenty-year-old Albert is the ambitious illegitimate son of an English duke. He 'inherits' a 'half-perfect' destiny in a closed and exclusive society in 1913. When he has to leave for Transylvania, Albert realizes he loves the aspiring Duchess Josepha – the Duchess' niece, living at the Duke's manor. At the abandoned medieval Transylvanian castle, Albert fights against a world of dark forces of the past and the vampires that surround the place, trying to make him one of their own. He becomes a vampire most unexpectedly, and his immortality seems haunted by guilt. Tremendous forces call him to follow a more significant and challenging path in a vast world full of mysteries and blood, undermined by vampires led by the most tyrannical one. The wave of evil rises at the outbreak of the first world war, bringing unforeseen challenges, and Albert and his friends choose to fight to stop the vampires' plan. What outcome will the big fight have? Will Albert be a victor or a martyr? Will he receive the reward for giving up fighting, or will he find another way?

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The Heirs The First of the Vampires follows a twenty-year-old Albert who is the illegitimate son of an English Duke. Filled with ambition to prove himself he is more than happy to inherit a half perfect destiny in a closed and exclusive society in 1913. It is only when he is tasked to travel to Transylvania to look after a castle there that Albert becomes aware he loves the aspiring Duchess Josepha, niece to the duchess living at the Duke’s estate. Their love is far from an easy and straight path. Made all the more treacherous by the dark forces of the past and vampires that surround the castle he must care for. Despite his best efforts Albert is turned into a vampire but his immortality seems to come with a guilt he can hardly bear. Despite forces calling for him to take a challenging path full of mysteries and blood, Albert goes his own way to find his new vampire self. It is only with the outbreak of the first world war that Albert realises her must fight to stop this new wave of evil from rising.
This was certainly an interesting and captivating read. Told through Albert’s point of view we learn of his upbringing and challenges he faces after seemingly been elevated in society. At first I will admit I was not sure I would like Albert but it was interesting to see him seemingly mature and grow through the novel so much so that by the end he was a favourite character. It is a little difficult to give a very detailed review without spoilers but let me say this book definitely kept me engaged and wanting to find out more.
The characters were all well rounded for the parts they played and as mentioned I loved how Albert’s character seemingly progressed throughout. It was also interesting to see how he dealt with his immortality and the choices he made. Next to the characters the plot was well developed and engaging. I particularly liked how Renshaw ties historical events to the novel to help progress the story forward. It all tied together really well and despite this being speculative and a tad dark fantasy I have to say it was rather believable due to these real historical sections being added in.
If you are looking for a good vampire tale with a protagonist who grows along the way and offers a more human side to the vampire look no further than The Heirs.
