The New Washington D.C.
8:00 AM
Nero peered out of the large window. The world flashed by in a blur of greens, blues, and browns. It was hard to believe that it was finally happening. After so many months of hoping and planning, he was finally on his way.
Nero drew his gaze away from the window when he heard the delicate chime ringing out from the small speaker in the corner of his carriage.
Good morning, passengers,
the female voice said. We hope you have a pleasant journey on the Voyager 546. We will shortly be arriving in New Washington, D.C, and we ask that you begin to prepare yourselves for disembarking. Thank you.
The voice fell silent, and Nero turned back to the window. He had read that the Voyager trains traveled at speeds up to 400mph, but the experience was something else. He had left Arizona that morning to embark on the 2,200-mile cross-country journey, and now, just five hours later, he was about to arrive in Washington.
The train was now slowing down, and the blurs began to take on various shapes. Nero could make out the industrial buildings in the distance. He was amazed to see that their tall chimneys did not emit black smoke like those in Arizona and other parts of America. Of course, he knew that Washington had no air pollution but actually seeing it was beyond his expectations.
As the train moved past the outskirts of Washington and into the city center, the small chime sound rang out again.
We will shortly be passing through the city’s protective shield,
the voice said. "Please be aware that the lights may dim briefly due to the electrical current.
