The Princess and the Golden Quest - Prentiss Belton

    Introduction

Captain, Captain, on the north starboard bow I see black men with three heads.

Aye, Captain, I see it too, said the sailor next to him.

These stories and myths were brought back to Europe in the Middle Ages and believed to be true, but according to a black seafarer in his early twenties and a scholar from Spain whose name was Leo Africanus, Africa is described as a place filled with charm and splendor, with palaces of exceeding beauty; and beautiful brown and black women with their faces veiled; and rich generous kings throughout the land, so then may we say Africa was a time of glorious adventure, a time of love and romance ………a time of THE PRINCESS AND THE GOLDEN QUEST.

    Mansa Musa

A person wearing a colorful hat Description automatically generated with low confidence

The great king named Mansa Musa reigned in the 14th century. He was a wise king who held elaborate courts for his people. He believed in peace and order throughout his Kingdom. He held great stores of books and kept judges and clergy at his disposal. The streets in his province were safe at night and his people could go out in the night without being molested. He kept great stores of horses; and he believed in knowledge and had great stories of learned scholars.

During his rule, King Musa did not sell his servants into slavery. The word slavery was a word not known in Mansa Musa’s time. The word slave was invented by the European traders, who turned the trading of goods into trading and capturing the Africans that lived close to the shores of the African continent.

The story goes on to say that the wealthy king had so much gold available that he tied one of his royal horses to a large gold nugget as he went to speak to his huge Royal Court. This is the true history of Mansa Musa. This king really existed from 1280 to 1337 A.D. in the great Kingdom of Mali in West Africa.

    Chapter One

    Discovering the

    Buried City

The year is 1400 AD in West Africa. On the beautiful African plains are two young horsemen riding beautiful steeds, one white and the other a shiny black.  The riders are two brothers. The oldest who is named Tandy, is 12 and riding the white horse; the younger brother is named Daya, and he is 10 years old and riding the black horse.  Together they ride side by side under a golden red sky.  They ride towards the sun, then turn their steeds back towards their village, called Niana.

They decide to surprise their sister Anaya, who is tending the goats and chickens in the yard.  They ride close to where she is feeding the goats; the goats were frightened and started running and ran into a table close to Anaya, who had just finished milking them, causing the milk to spill on her new dress that she had planned to wear to the marketplace.  She was furious. Tandy and Daya could not stop laughing.

Anaya screams at them, I am going to tell mother; but then she gets an idea and decides to have the last laugh by playing a trick on them.  She notices that they are under the big fig tree, which has a branch strong enough to hold her.  So, as the brothers are laughing and not paying attention to her, she gets some of the goats’ milk that she had poured in the gourds and placed near the big tree. She quietly climbs the tree and gets up on the strong branch and pours the goats’ milk on their heads.  She comes down the tree, continuously laughing and though her two brothers are soaked in goats’ milk they are all joined in laughter.

Ten years have passed; the two brothers and their sister are now grown up. Tandy is 22, Daya is 20 and Anaya is 19. She is busy going through beautiful dresses, trying to
