About this ebook

A couple years before the official series, a vampire case comes in at the end of a long shift. James is hopeful when he finds out it's just investigation, they're not expected to actually fight anything tonight. But what do you do when you're out in the dark with an exhausted teammate who's being pulled in too many directions at once? And is the handsome stranger you find out there (whose entire being absolutely screams vampire) really a disgruntled Foundation researcher like he claims?

James has had about twenty minutes of training on how to deal with vampires. But he's going to need all of it if they're going to survive this quick investigation trip.

The Lancaster Line is a prequel short story to North County Paranormal Unit, a paranormal workplace series available on most online retailers. This story can be read as a standalone as well.

    Vampires.

James had already been debating which fast food drive-thru he was going to for dinner when his shift ended in an hour, but Amelia’s voice broke through his indecisiveness. He looked up at her. What about them?

They were in the living room of the old suburban raised ranch house/local headquarters of the Foundation for Paranormal Studies’ North Worcester County branch, one of the best paranormal investigation teams in the New England region. And James had already put in about ten hours of being one of those best, so he sincerely hoped this discussion wasn’t going where he thought it was.

We’ve got vampires, Amelia said. And the Foundation just sent our assignment.

    For tomorrow, right?

Do vampires come out during the daylight?

Maybe? It wasn’t like actual vampires were exactly like they seemed in movies. They drank blood and hypnotized humans to do their bidding, but it wasn’t like they were repelled by garlic and holy water. Which made investigating them so much fun and exactly what James wanted to be doing right now.

He groaned, rubbing his hand against his forehead. Alright, he said finally. Are we having a meeting? Or are we just prepping and heading out?

He was second-in-command, so he should be the one answering those questions. But their team captain was in a meeting with their logistics coordinator right now and, based on the raised voices he’d heard earlier from behind that closed door, things weren’t going so well. So maybe they’d be better off just looking over the case together and figuring it out themselves.

Amelia sat down on the couch beside him and held the paper between them. Seems pretty standard, she said. "Signs of activity in the woods to the west of here. Drained animals, though some of them were pulped on Route Two so we can’t prove they were empty to begin
