About this ebook

“IF You really want to hear about” my history of the 6 decades of changes in ‘my Village’ “you’ll probably want to know where I was born, and what my lousy childhood was like….and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don’t feel like going into it if you want to know the truth.” In the first place that stuff bores me, and in the second places, my parents" long since in their graves in Mt Pleasant Cemetery overlooking the bowling alley in Hartville, Ohio - ”would have about two hemorrhages apiece if I told anything very personal about them . They were quite touchy about anything like that and would not appreciate it …Besides, I am not going to tell you my whole goddamn autobiography or something. I am just going to tell you about this stuff that happened to me” starting in the fall of 1957.

    FOREWORD

Marge Colt’s story is a story we hear over and over again. The small town girl finishes college and heads for the big city. She leaves behind everything that spells and or smells of small town Ohio.

Marge has a wonderful way of telling her story. She has a no frills, no chaser attitude in writing every part. There is something about living in New York. Marge almost makes you believe that life for her began in the city of New York.

Reading Marge’s story allows the reader to hear the bustling traffic, visualize the vital patrons who frequented the local Jewish deli and crowded into the near by patisserie for something sweet and a strong cup of coffee.

Marge spent enough time in the East Village to witness the community she had come to love morph and change right in front of her. Stone Wall riots, rents changed, new building went up and shady acquisitions of established residences occurred without recourse.

Marge acknowledged her first encounter with a gay neighbor who became a good friend. Nothing like that in Ohio she said.

Marge’s writing style is conversational. It flows right through all of her experiences. A lifetime of experiences she will always cherish. There were regrets about some decisions and there were adorations of people and places she will never forget. There may even be a few she would do again in a heart beat, if age and time would permit it.

    CHAPTER 1

M Y TRIP FROM Ohio to the West Village began on a sparkling September day in l957. After 4 years of college, I arrived in New York ready to have fun, certainly, and knowing that I had no employment skills, still eager to embark on some sort of a career that would at least pay the rent. Little did I imagine that my trip from Greenwich Village to the West Village, began on that sunny day I arrived at 12 Fifth Avenue!!! The address sounded elegant. It was in fact, a tall
