About this ebook
In the tradition of ANNE OF GREEN GABLES and PIPPI LONGSTOCKING comes a heart-warming novel about love, family, grief, joy and the power of laughter and imagination.
When Inge Maria arrives on the tiny island of Bornholm in Denmark to live with her grandmother, she's not sure what to expect. Her grandmother is stern, the people on the island are strange, and children are supposed to be seen and not heard. But no matter how hard Inge tries to be good, mischief has a way of finding her. Could it be that a bit of mischief is exactly what Grandmother and the people of Bornholm need?

Reviews for When Mischief Came to Town
23 ratings5 reviews
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Really funny story of Inge Maria, coming to Bornholm to live with her grandmother. 1911 Denmark, with farm chores and church and rote learning in school -- thank goodness Inge Maria is there to liven it up! Some serious conversations about losing loved ones (Inge Maria has just lost her mom and her dad died when she was a baby; Klaus is also grieving). Not a lot of consequences for some serious mischief, but then, the mischief isn't really all that serious, and it's great to see the adults kind of blink and giggle in response.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Meh. Too much tell, not enough show.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5When Mischief Came to Town is a great story about a girl named Inge. The book starts out with Inge moving to a new place to live with her grandmother after her mother has passed away. After first meeting her grandmother, Inge is nervous because her grandmother is strict and seems unfriendly. As the book progresses Inge and her grandmother begin to build a beautiful relationship. Inge is a child that gets into mischief, in the end it helps bring adventure to her grandmother and the town and helps Inge to build new amazing relationships. This book was fun to read and had so many interesting characters, In just the first chapter I was pulled in by all the colorful vocabulary. This book would be great to have for children in the classroom who were struggling with using descriptive words in their writing.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Inge Maria is a sweetly wholesome imp of a girl who leaves Copenhagen to live with her grandmother after her mother dies. Despite her grandmother's stern demeanor, the stifling atmosphere at school and the slower pace of the island of Bornholm, Inge does her best to shake things up in a joyful way, if only to muffle the grief of her loss. Inge is spirited and rascally and her adventures make an ideal family read-aloud. Lib notes: There is a scene where she recalls "a big long box being lowered into a hole" and she tries not to think about what's in the box. There are also times when her grief overwhelms her but Grandmother is there to comfort her.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5It felt like a mix of HEIDI and ANNE OF GREEN GABLES, but not derivitave. A funny book about a girl who is not necessarily mischievous, but does seem to get into funny predicaments. I enjoyed seeing the progression of the love and appreciation growing between grandmother and granddaughter. I just loved it.
