Derek E. Bowman is a D.O./Ph.D. student at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in East Lansing, Michigan. Derek wrote this heartwarming story in high school when he always dreamed of becoming both a doctor and a published author. While the road to medical school was not easy—Derek applied for admittance three years in a row before finally being accepted—he continued to work hard and believe in himself. Derek hopes that the story of Sammy the Shrimp will inspire others to pursue their dreams.
