A. Berendsohn, der als Gründungsvater der Exilforschung gilt, im Jahr 1946. Zwar ist seine Vorstellung, die Exilliteratur sei »eine in sich geschlossene Periode der deutschen Literaturgeschichte«, in der Forschung heute nicht mehr anerkannt. Doch beruht sie auf einer noch immer weitgehend gültigen Annahme: Die Schriftsteller im Exil beriefen sich auf gemeinsame Werte, unabhängig davon, in welchem Ausmaß sie sich dessen bewusst waren und was genau sie unter ›Humanismus‹ verstanden.
Der vorliegende Band widmet sich dem Wunsch deutschsprachiger Schriftsteller und Intellektueller, diese Werte zu bewahren, aufrechtzuerhalten und neu zu interpretieren, und zeigt, auf welche humanistischen und aufklärerischen Traditionen und Repräsentanten sie dabei zurückgriffen. Welche Ideale und Vorstellungen liegen ihren Ansichten zugrunde? In zehn Aufsätzen zeichnet der Band auch die Grenzen dieser Ideale und Vorstellungen nach und erkundet ihnen innewohnende ›Dialektiken‹ – sowie die immer wiederkehrende Frage, in welcher Weise Literatur im Exil, und vom Exil aus, politisch Einfluss ausüben kann, oder sollte.
Mit Beiträgen u. a. zu Walter Benjamin, Yvan Goll, Theodor Kramer, Heinrich Mann, Anna Seghers, Friedrich Wolf, Arnold Zweig und Stefan Zweig.
