Chapter One: The City That Walked
Caelum looked out from the Observatory Deck of the moving city of Aetherton, the giant cogs and wheels below groaning and hissing as they churned through the blanket of white that covered the world. The city was a behemoth of metal and steam, a fortress on legs that never stopped moving. Above him, the sky was a tapestry of twilight hues, the only constant in a world of perpetual motion.
Caelum, are you daydreaming again?
a voice chided from behind.
He turned to see his friend, Lyra, leaning against the doorframe, her arms crossed. Her copper hair was pulled back into a ponytail that swayed like a pendulum with the city’s movements.
Just thinking,
Caelum replied, eyes drifting back to the swirling fog below.
That’s dangerous,
she quipped, joining him at the railing. Especially today. The Centennial Celebration, remember?
As if on cue, the city began to rumble, a signal that it was approaching the rendezvous point with another city. Once every hundred years, Aetherton aligned with its sister city, Terranova, to exchange resources, stories, and to celebrate their continued survival against the fog.
The two teenagers watched as Terranova emerged from the mist, its silhouette a mirror image of their own city. Bridges extended like reaching arms, and the air filled with the sound of cheers and steam whistles.
Come on,
Lyra said, pulling on Caelum’s sleeve. Let’s not miss the opening ceremony.
They made their way through the throngs of people, all heading toward the central plaza. Caelum couldn’t help but feel a pang of excitement. The Centennial was the only time the city felt alive in a new way, buzzing with the prospect of change.
As the ceremony began, the city elders spoke of unity and resilience. But Caelum’s attention was stolen by something else—something no one else seemed to notice. A faint hum, almost imperceptible, that vibrated through the metal under his feet.
Then, without warning, the earth trembled, and the fog below roiled violently. People screamed, clinging to whatever they could as the cities swayed. Caelum and Lyra exchanged a glance of shared fear. This was no ordinary disruption.
The fog surged upward like a tidal wave, and for a moment, it seemed as if it would swallow the cities whole. But then, just as quickly as it had risen, it retreated.
In the aftermath, amidst the chaos and confusion, Caelum noticed something that would change the course of his life forever. A small object had been left behind by the receding fog—a metallic sphere, pulsating with light.
He picked it up, and the hum he’d felt earlier
