PREFACE
WHEN Volume I of The Larkin Papers was published in 1951, my associates and I began to dream of an index, comprehensive in scope, to the entire series. There were so many names, personal, geographical, even ordinary nouns, often spelled in different combinations of letters, depending on the competence of the writer, or his nationality, or sheer carelessness and haste as he scribbled a hurried note to business associates, government officials, friends or relatives, that confusion was difficult to avoid. Few of the pioneers, whether Spanish, Mexican, Anglo, or whatever, had more than an elementary knowledge of spelling and writing, and their skill in penmanship was equally problematical. Lest we be too critical, we today often have difficulty in deciphering the handwriting of some of our correspondents—or even our own! For accuracy, we now rely on the typewriter, but that invention was still unknown in the day of Consul Larkin, Governor Micheltorena, and their contemporaries.
On publication of Volume X of The Larkin Papers in 1964, the urgency of providing a usable index to the set became acute. No one could remember the names or relationship of all the Larkins, for example, or many another individual or subject mentioned in the Letters. This mass of material demanded a key to unlock its buried treasures. The Tables of Contents for the individual volumes, it is true, gave in alphabetical order the names of the authors of letters, date of writing and recipient, but, if helpful, this was still inadequate.
At this point, relief came from an unexpected source, when Anna Marie and Everett G. Hager, a husband-and-wife team who have done much work of this nature, volunteered to tackle this perplexing and tricky chore. Through their efforts, aided by suggestions and criticism of friends, the index was at last put in order, typed, and sent to the Press, news which cheered my heart as I was about to leave Madrid for Berkeley after an absence of two years.
Several members of the Bancroft Library staff aided the Hagers in their selfimposed task, especially Assistant Director Robert H. Becker, Vivian Fisher, Patricia Howard, and Dale L. Morgan. To each of them, and to others who offered help and suggestions, I wish to extend a grateful Thank You.
An index is not intended as popular reading! It is purely and simply a tool, an aid to the investigator, a handy reference. Imagination in its use will prove helpful. If one approach to a topic proves futile, try another! You may find just what you are looking for.
The citations in the Index refer to the pages of the printed volumes of The Larkin Papers, not to the numbers of the original documents. The Roman numerals refer to the particular volume; the Arabic numerals cite the pages in the printed text. With this in mind, this index should prove a most convenient, time-saving device for the investigator of early Western history.
The chronological range of the different volumes in The Larkin Papers reveals the time-span of the documents.
GEORGE P. HAMMOND
