FALL BREAK
Tires of the black SUV slid across the frozen River Gorge Bridge in Fayetteville, West Virginia. As they braced for impact, the faces of the family of five wore terrified expressions, knowing their hope of survival looked bleak. Only gasps, seatbelts snapping taut, and the crunching of snow could be heard. The Silcrum’s were thrown forward in their seats as the truck smashed through the railing of the bridge, deployed the white clouds of the airbags, tottering over the edge. Nothing but the cloud-like fog was visible. A slow, creaking sway forward and the SUV fell freely. The family held onto what they could as the scene cut to small flashes, each moment in time, feeling surreal rather than a conscious stream. The SUV smacked the water beneath the bridge and disappeared into the fog of the day, and within moments, the glass windows cracked, filled the truck with water and claimed the fate of John, Miranda, Katie, Sarah, and little Justin.
John Silcrum, a devoted husband, father, and financial analyst, was excited about the trip to West Virginia for him and his family. He had found the perfect spot, right across the River Gorge Bridge with unimaginable scenery. He knew his wife would romanticize the moments spent standing on the bridge, the stone path beneath their feet on the walking trail, breathtaking views and fallen leaves this time of year. It was late-October. The kids were out for a week for fall break and while the weather would be chilly under the Virginian skies, the distant waterfalls, outdoor bonfire, and hiking trails would be a sight to see for the kids.
Nothing brought John more pleasure than to see the smiling faces of his children, packed, and ready for their first adventure of the school year. He and Miranda had done well raising three beautiful children. Katie, 10, Sarah, 7, and Justin, 4. They had been together since their teens and fell deeper in love, the older they got. Children simply brought them together more, as they both valued having a big family and being close. These trips were the sentiments they all needed to stay connected, considering their busy schedules.
John was at the office. He earned a six-figure salary at AAMB Global Investments, though his dream job wasn’t to be a financial analyst. He was just always good with numbers. He had someday hoped to author a successful book or two and live off that income, but that dream seemed few and far between with three children and a wife. However, Miranda still worked to support her family. She was a professor at a local University in Rock Hill, South Carolina, where the family lived.
John hardly took a vacation. His income was much more than Miranda’s, which didn’t matter, but he loved to keep money saved for emergencies and have a separate stash if he lived out his dreams. Just as he packed his leather bag with his laptop and company files, his boss, Kyle walked in for a chat.
"So, someone
