Why I Wrote This Book?

I wrote this book because I believe that conducting literature reviews can be transformed from a dry and intimidating process to a process that is pleasant and easy to understand. Like any other graduate student and early career researcher, I was terrified by the idea of conducting a literature review independently.

I was lost in the enormous information on the internet when I started the literature review process. Graduate students and doctoral researchers are often lost in the enormous information and guidelines while writing a literature review and synthesis for their master theses or Ph.D. dissertations. The literature review guidelines contain detailed information on the literature review process but fail to provide a hands-on approach to conducting a literature review in a short time. My mission with this book is to simplify conducting and reporting the literature review process as much as possible and enable the readers to maintain the scientific robustness simultaneously.

I decided to do a systematic literature review doing my master thesis under the MIHMEP program in SDA Bocconi, Milan, Italy. I chose genomics as a topic which seemed very interesting to me and rightly in time to address some of the burning questions in direct-to-consumer genetic testing. I was happy that finally I made my choice and selected the topic. But I had no idea that the coming weeks would haunt me because I had no clue how to start the literature review.

Expecting that Google would answer all my questions and provide me with a simple step-by-step guide to conducting the literature review, I was lost in the enormous information on the internet. The existing guidelines and books on conducting literature reviews are complex and intimidating for graduate students and early-career researchers. These guidelines contain detailed information on the literature review process but fail to provide a hands-on approach to conducting the literature review and writing the report for graduate students and early-career researchers without prior experience.

This book aims to simplify the process of conducting literature reviews by providing a concise, easy-to-understand, and hands-on guide for graduate students and early career researchers to start with a literature review. Unlike the existing guidelines and books on how to write literature reviews, this book provides two examples of literature reviews demonstrating each step involved: selecting research questions to writing the final report.
