The Booming Sky
Ian stepped quickly down the long, low tunnel connecting the Old State House to the Orange Line platform at State Street.
The tunnel, as far as Ian could see, was empty. He was grateful for that. Sometimes, a homeless man or woman would sit about halfway down, cardboard sign leaning against the pale yellow tiles of the curved wall, and look at commuters as they passed by, hoping to make eye contact. Ian dreaded being noticed by people like that—homeless people with dirty clothes or the addicts who loafed around aimlessly by the entrance to Park Street Station, with nothing better to do than sit on the brick walls ringing the plaza and talk. To be seen by someone like
