Bekk's Treasure
Bekk Falasdell, leader of the Avarkӕsir, or Honor Warriors, shouldered his way into the clan meeting. The stink of pipe smoke filled the air. He never took up with the foul habit, though he had a few of his own.
He shouted into the dwarf gathering, interrupting the speaker. We got albino stygg skapps running north. They be laden down with treasure.
Amani Falasdell, the Premier and Chief Clan Elder, glared at him. Ye should wait for the council to open the floor for new business.
Ain’t got time to wait.
Bekk swept his meaty arm through the hazy air. They be running, and every delay helps them escape.
Gregg Merkasgedigg slammed the stone table with a grizzled palm. Ye interrupt the council yet again. Ye should find some manners before someone finds them for ye.
Bekk put his hands on his hips as he grinned through his waist long, auburn beard. I be right here. Come… teach me some manners.
After a brief pause, Bekk shook his head. Nothing but talk.
He turned to face his ma sitting at the end of the oblong table. I be asking to lead two hundred troops. Even split of any spoils after expenses.
The Premier pursed her lips and stroked her well-manicured beard, laced with silver. She sucked on her pipe. Bekk, the stygg skapps be no threat to us. They be running away from the keep.
She blew smoke high into the air.
Gregg harrumphed. And they be running onto the Ice Plains.
Bekk smiled at the round dwarf. I figured ye weren’t coming, Gregg. I be looking for stouthearted folk. Dwarves not afraid of some snow and wind. Or to cross axes with the ugly brutes.
Amani stood, grasping her gold embossed pipe in hand. Ye be welcome to canvas the keep for volunteers. But the council has already voted on the issue.
Bekk fumed. Amani had said he should have waited for new business, but they’d already voted. He dared a glare at his ma. Someone had called the meeting while he’d been gathering information. Someone—he looked at Gregg—had outmaneuvered him.
