    Bianca always woke up before the alarm, just as the sun slipped inside through the open window. She carefully got out of bed, so as not to disturb Catarina. The two had been sharing the apartment for about three years now, and the bed for the past six months.

    Their story was told through photos on the wall. The digital frames showed small movies. The first time they met was during Carnaval, Bianca dressed as a witch, Catarina as a fairy. The next picture was Catarina’s last birthday, a huge three-layered cake colored after the bisexual flag filled with candles on the center table of their living room and all their friends singing happy birthday; and the last was their first kiss, on the bridge that crossed Lily River. Those memories always brought a smile to Bianca’s face every morning as she got dressed.

    Once ready, she made her way to the kitchen for a quick breakfast. A nice cup of coffee and an apple was all she had time for before leaving the house. The hospital wasn’t far from their apartment, just a bike ride away, but her responsibilities as Chief of Healers demanded she be there before most.
