Chapter 1
The Fight for Independence
On April 19, 1775, you heard what had happened. The previous night, a group of British Redcoats had left Boston, Massachusetts, and marched toward the town of Concord. The colonists were rumored to be hiding weapons there, and British troops had been ordered to seize them.
What happened next would change the lives of everyone in the Thirteen Colonies. Farmers and shop owners throughout the area took up arms. These militia gathered by the hundreds to face the British in the Battles of Lexington and Concord.
Colonists fighting British soldiers in a field near a town. The first shots of the Revolutionary War were fired at the Battles of Lexington and Concord, west of Boston, Massachusetts.
You did not take part in the fighting, but you heard of the militia’s victory. News of it spread quickly throughout the colonies. The Redcoats were driven back to Boston. It was a cause for celebration.
It was also a reason to worry. You know this minor skirmish will have major consequences for the colonists. The British won’t let an act of rebellion against their authority go unpunished.
But you also hear rumblings from unhappy colonists. Many were already about to rebel. They felt British laws and taxes were unfair. After the shots fired that spring day, many more are now inspired to revolt. The Battles of Lexington and Concord signal the start of a much bigger conflict. The colonists’ fight for independence from Great Britain in what will become known as the Revolutionary War has begun!
In the coming days and weeks, you hear that leaders throughout the colonies are gathering in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They form the Second Continental Congress. This group of Founders is in charge of governing the colonies and preparing them for war. One of their first acts is to establish the Continental Army. They place George Washington from Virginia in command.
George Waashington speaking to men attending the Second Continental Congress. The Continental Congress chose George Washington to lead the Continental Army because of his military experience in the French and Indian War (1754–1763).
You are encouraged by this bit of news. During the French and Indian War, Washington proved to be a capable leader.
You know the colonists will be up against one of the world’s greatest powers. The British Redcoats are well-armed and professionally trained. The colonies will need all the help they can muster. So you decide to join the Patriots in their fight for independence.
But how will you serve?
You could be an officer in the Continental Army and serve as an advisor to General Washington. It would be an honor to serve alongside a hero of the French and Indian War.
You could serve as a sailor. You would be fighting against the mighty British Royal Navy. Your mind swirls with excitement just thinking of the adventures you might have at sea.
Or you could serve in
