REBIRTH OF THE RED BLADES
For the past several days, Janara travelled the road that led her towards the town of Argyle. Instead of the pleasant town she expected, she stood before columns of black smoke rising from the centre of the village. One woman screamed in agony as blood dripped down from her arm. Another man lay motionless next to a pile of debris.
Janara gasped, her breath caught in her throat. All around, people cried out in terror and anguish. Above them all was a winged creature circling low over the centre of town. A dragon.
She turned and scanned the horizon behind her. The sky was turning pink; dusk was fast approaching. Soon, the sun would set and nightfall would follow. If she didn’t get help soon, everyone in Argyle might die.
Then a small hand reached out for hers. Janara glanced down. As tears rolled down her cheeks, she bent down and picked up two children. Two little girls were clinging to her legs, sniffling.
Please help us. Our mother... The dragon destroyed our house!
one sister sobbed hysterically. The three girls looked up at the massive beast flying overhead. It circled twice, then landed atop an abandoned building nearby. With its powerful wings, the dragon lifted off again and flew away.
What should I do? Should I go after it? Or try to save those who can still walk?
Janara’s gaze fell upon a group of men carrying injured villagers. They passed close enough for her to make out their faces. At that moment, she did what was best. Without hesitation, she ran toward them.
As they neared, Janara slowed to a stop and waited. She held the two young girls tight, shielding them with her body. The men paused when they saw her.
Can you help these kids? Take the wounded somewhere safe too. Let me deal with the dragon.
Two of the men helped carry the youngest girl while the third grabbed hold of the older sister. Together, the three of them carried the trio to a forested area where others gathered to take care of the wounded.
Meanwhile, Janara walked back towards the building where the dragon perched. In the middle of the charred remains of civilians, the creature stood calmly watching the carnage below. It tilted its head slightly, staring at the human.
An icy chill crept across her skin. Suddenly, she felt like she could sense every ounce of the monster’s evil intentions. Instead of being afraid, she was determined to face the dragon head-on.
Without warning, the dragon leaped into action. It launched itself upward and flew straight at Janara. With a deep breath, she braced herself.
Just then, the ground shook violently beneath her feet. She stumbled forward, barely able to keep her balance. The dragon clutched on top of the roof of the closest building. Its claws dug deep grooves into the beams. Its sharp fangs snapped shut, leaving long gouges in the wood underneath. It snarled angrily, glaring at Janara through narrow slits of red eyes.
I’m not going anywhere,
she said defiantly. Then she raised both hands high above her head and shouted, I am Janara of the Red Blades! And you’re about to meet your end!
With another loud roar, the dragon lunged forward. Janara dropped to her knees and narrowly avoided being crushed by the weight of its enormous form. Still, the force of its charge knocked her backward onto her rear. Before she knew it, she tumbled helplessly through the air.
But just as suddenly, the dragon stopped dead in its tracks. A blast of hot wind blew against her face, sending her hair whipping wildly around in front of her eyes. Thick, choking fumes poured out of the hole in the structure, stinging Janara’s nose and making her cough uncontrollably.
With another roar, the dragon shot upwards. A blast of flame shot forth from its mouth, engulfing half of the rooftop of a nearby house. The Red Blades? I thought they’d been wiped out centuries ago.
The creature spoke with an insensitive chuckle.
That’s not true! We, the descendants of the first generation, have kept alive the teachings of the legendary sword smiths!
she retorted at the dragon’s amusement.
Sunset broke over the horizon. Rays of sunshine peeked through the clouds, bathing everything in golden light. There was something eerie about the way sunlight shimmered on the dragon’s scales and reflected off its crimson hide. Just as suddenly, the earth trembled once more.
Janara unsheathed her sword and leapt forward. She darted left and right, slashing at the beast’s neck. Her blade bit deeply into the hard muscle. Blood sprayed outwards, but the wound didn’t appear to be slowing the dragon down. In fact, it seemed to aggravate the monster. The dragon roared loudly and, with a glint of anger in its eyes; it descended below. Once again, it turned its attention to the streets below. With a mighty swipe of his great talons, the dragon brought an entire section of buildings crashing to the ground.
Janara stared wide eyed at the destruction. No matter how hard she tried, nothing seemed capable of stopping this monstrous foe. Her muscles tensed, preparing for further battle. The dragon unfurled its wings and soared into the air with a mighty flap that threw up clouds of dust from the floor. It circled above the village before plummeting down, hurtling toward her like a massive meteorite.
With all her focus, Janara mustered the obsolete power of the red blades in her mind. A dangerously high fever coursed through her body; despite this, her grip was powerful as steel.
The beast continued to approach until it was only a few feet away. Its jaws were open in anticipation of feasting on the reckless woman who dared challenge its might.
Though her eyes were closed, Janara
