    Foreword

Hi! People call me Money. I prefer you think of me as a loving friend who wants the best for you. It’s funny how, over the many years I’ve been part of human life, people have attached all sorts of meaning to me. They’ve used me to control. They’ve used me to feel better about themselves. They’ve used me to feel important and worthy. Having lots of me makes some people feel more important; others feel I corrupt. Some of you use me to help others or to do enjoyable, meaningful things. Many of you worry I’ll leave you. That there won’t be enough of me. All of this is true and none of this is true. I am a mirror – a reflection of your inner world and of the outer world.

I have a secret for you: I am a force for good. I want you to be happy, healthy, and prosperous (though I know it doesn’t always feel like that). Some of you hate me, some of you love me. Some of you think you don’t deserve me, and others feel they are entitled to me.

What I most want is for us to have a great relationship. I want to be your friend. As a good friend, I’ll be there for you. I won’t enable, but I’ll support you. And, as in any solid relationship, you’ll have to do your part too.

    What does that mean?

It means that you won’t talk badly about me. Some people have said, I hate money. Why would I want to hang around you if you hate me? Others want nothing to do with me and delegate our relationship to someone else: Oh, my advisor (or wife, or partner, or accountant) will take care of it. How long would your friendships last if you pushed them off on someone else to nourish? I’m not saying others can’t be involved – this may be the best thing for us – but don’t ignore me, please.

Are you someone who constantly worries about me? Like an overprotective parent who’s afraid something bad will happen, or a clingy, jealous partner who’s afraid of being dumped? This isn’t cool. When you hang on to me so tightly, it doesn’t work well for either of us.

Ours is not a high-maintenance relationship. I appreciate you being aware that we are connected. If you are clear on what you want, I’ll find it easier to be there for you. I care for you, and I want you to care for me. I also appreciate it when you share me generously. There is more than enough of me to go around if people decide to use me well.

I’m writing this book with Ellen. She and I have been having conversations for a while now. I would love to talk with you as well. Throughout the book, we’ll explore ways in which you and I can communicate more clearly and easily with each other.

But why now? Why another money book? Why
