Genta Sebastian

Genta Sebastian runs with scissors, always laughs without shame, sometimes writes naked, and dreams big. She started life as a child and against her own advice swiftly attained adulthood. Full grown adulting, however, proved to lie just outside her skill set and beyond her ken. Instead, she's enjoyed being an elementary school teacher, crochet artiste, amateur community theater player, master teacher, criminally wicked cookie baker, professional storyteller, Christmas stocking needle-pointer, an okay parent, cool grandparent, and epic great-grandparent. And along the way she also found time to become a published, award-winning author.

    ––––––––

On my way to the Sea Lion exhibit, a vision in pink, waving, laughing, and shouting over her shoulder, I’ll see you next semester, swerved into my path. I pulled up suddenly and the two full pails of raw fish I carried sloshed violently, drenching her fairy princess dress.

She stopped just as quickly, standing there in her beautiful party gown, looking pretty as a picture from the waist up. Gorgeous eyes stared down at her gown, glossy golden-brown curls draped over shapely bare shoulders. The glittering lace bodice clung to all the right places, low-cut in the style of wealthy women displaying exquisite jewelry. Around her neck a single strand of pink pearls hung low to the top of her cleavage, identical gems hung from delicate ears. But from the waist down the skirt of pink tulle, or satin, or whatever it’s called, drooped, heavily soiled with grey fish muck.

    Oh, no, I cried, horrified.

Oh, yes, I’m afraid. She smiled with well-bred humor and grace before grimacing at the smell and holding her nose, just like a kid. All in all, she took it well, considering she’s clearly a spoiled student from the U. whose philanthropic parents paid for a four-figure ticket for her evening’s entertainment. Lord knows what the cost of replacing a dress like that will set back the zoo’s bank account.

The timing couldn’t be worse. For weeks I’d scrubbed each exhibit, every nook and cranny, until they gleamed. I spent the last three days climbing up palm trees to wind lights around their trunks so once the sun set the place would twinkle like a virgin’s eyes. The orchestra could be heard setting up in the bandstand, and wealthy patrons were slowly beginning to arrive. A yearly tradition, the Zooscapade would begin in less than fifteen minutes, a late summer fund-raising fancy-dress party that took place on the zoo grounds.

The lovely, aristocratic young woman who’s pink ballgown reeked of fish stared at me. Now, I’m the first to admit I’m not much to look at, but she took it far beyond a casual glance. She absorbed my six-foot two-inch frame, beakish nose, hooded eyes, and spiky dark hair on the sweep up, my wide sensuous lips, muscular shape, and masculine bearing on the way down. Fascinating eyes registered the stitched name on the pocket of my zookeeper’s uniform, Bud. She lingered
