    Introduction

While pests like fleas, ticks and mosquitos can cause diseases in our pets, the new chemicals that are being developed to prevent and treat infestation are extremely toxic, resulting in serious side effects such as seizures, tremors, liver failure, and death. In many cases, a less toxic method of treatment could be undertaken, minimizing risks to our patients.

The use of toxic chemicals to prevent fleas, ticks and heartworms taxes your pet’s liver and kidneys, which must detoxify the chemicals. Some chemicals stay in the body for the LIFE of your pet. Many chemicals affect the nervous system, causing permanent nerve damage. Many of the chemicals are neurotoxins for insects and ticks, but they can also be neurotoxic to your pet.

By giving heartworm preventatives all year round in cold climates, you are administering unnecessary chemicals. These can also affect the nervous system, along with the liver, kidneys, and immune system. These drugs can cause severe reactions and death when administered along with flea and tick prevention chemicals.

Pet parents are no different than parents with children—it is up to each individual to advocate for their pet and alert their veterinarian to any adverse events or reactions, to question the use of chemicals, and to ask for safer alternatives when they are available. Pet parents are becoming more aware of the dangers associated with parasiticide chemical usage; hopefully this trend will continue for future generations of animals.

Fleas can transfer from animals to humans. The best way to deal with fleas in your environment is to prevent them from entering it in the
