The Roanoke Colony was established in 1587 by Sir Walter Raleigh, an English explorer and soldier who was granted a charter by Queen Elizabeth I to establish a colony in the New World. The colony was located on Roanoke Island, off the coast of what is now North Carolina. The settlers were led by John White, an artist and cartographer who had previously been to the New World with Raleigh's earlier expeditions.
The initial settlement was small, with only around 100 people, but it was intended to be the first step in establishing a permanent English presence in the New World.
