Prophecies tell of those who will lead

The battle to thwart rising darkness and greed.

Their arrival will herald the Time of Unfolding,

A cycle of growth and Universal remolding.

Ancient prophecies quaked to life on Myrrh, the last remaining piece of Old Earth. Raging winds stirred in deep mountain passes, charged across the grasslands, and whipped the treetops of the Terces Wood into a wild frenzy. Where the forest bordered the land surrounding the Guardian of Myrrh’s cottage, the tempest calmed to a gentle breeze.

Curtains rustled at the window of an upstairs room. Inside, the carved statue of a woman knelt on the rim of an alabaster fountain, her gaze fixed on the turbulence in the water-filled bowl.

The breeze dissipated. The water stilled. A blurred image floated to the surface and focused. Uneasiness filled the room.

Almiralyn Nadrugia, Myrrh’s Guardian, hastened up the steps to the second floor of her cottage, where the mystic fountain, Elcaro’s Eye, waited. An air of heightened expectancy shimmered on the water’s surface, then floated upward to fill the room, leaving sapphire-blue eyes filled with questions gazing up at her. A long braid hinting of sunlight and moonbeams caught the light and gleamed.

She stared at her reflection and almost smiled. I see you’ve been expecting me, Elcaro.

In response, water spilled from the upturned palms of her sculpted likeness and sent ripples in concentric circles toward the bowl’s curved sides. Its rhythmic drip, drop, drip erased the image, but failed to dispel Almiralyn’s growing uneasiness.

She crossed to the window and scanned her back garden. Where are you, Karrew? What have you found that might help us unravel our mystery? She glanced back at the fountain. Elcaro is about to share information. I wish you were here. With a disappointed sigh, she returned to the fountain and fixed her attention on the image-free water.

Curtain’s fluttering and a soft caw alerted her to her protector’s return. A large raven glided through the open window, landed on the alabaster rim, and cocked his head. One dark obsidian eye studied her.

She smiled her relief and ran a hand over his glossy feathers. I’m so glad you’re back, Karrew. What did you discover?

A deep-throated gurgle preceded his verbal response. I made an unobtrusive investigation as you asked, but detected nothing out of the ordinary. His neck feathers spiked and resettled. Yet tension, as tangible as the wind in the trees, is spreading throughout the land. No matter where I looked, I couldn’t find the reason. Do you think the fountain will show us what we need to know?

Almiralyn focused her intent on the undulating surface. Let’s find out. Elcaro, the All-Seeing Eye, show us the source of the uneasiness creeping over the Land of Myrrh.

The water ceased its rhythmic splashing and rippled into stillness. A blur of colors swirled and quieted into an image from an earlier time. She glanced at Karrew. The fountain’s showing my first visit to this sanctuary on the turning we arrived in Myrrh. I wonder how it impacts what’s happening now?

Her raven gave a throaty gurgle and returned his attention to the fountain.

Surprised by the memory from the past, Almiralyn forced herself to concentrate on what Elcaro’s Eye was choosing to share.

Her sapphire blue eyes sparkling with excitement, she explored the empty upstairs room she had chosen for her sanctuary. Educated from childhood to oversee and protect all that remained of Old Earth, she had completed her training and initiation and had just arrived in Myrrh to assume her duties as the land’s Guardian.

A flash of golden light heralded the materialization of a battered leather trunk beside the sanctuary window. Her heart pounding an excited song, she knelt, bowed her head, and rested a hand on the top. Delivered by the Galactic Guardians of the Fourth Galaxy, it contained the mystical objects required to defend the Land of Myrrh against those who coveted its secrets.

She raised her head, unbuckled the straps holding it closed, and lifted the lid. Moonlight illuminated the trunk’s blue-velvet interior and sent a thrill humming through her. With awed reverence, she touched the amethysts glistening in the hilt of the healing blade, Efillaeh; watched a golden needle spin above the gleaming red letters on the face of the Compass of Ostradio; and caressed a lapis-blue pouch containing the Stone of Remembering. Her gaze paused on an alabaster ladle with a sapphire cabochon in its handle before moving to the last and most important item the Guardians had placed in her protective care.

Giddy with the power emanating from the trunk, she picked up a miniature fountain sculpted from the rarest white alabaster in the Inner Universe. Cupping it in trembling hands, she carried it to the room’s center and held it up. I have great things to accomplish, Elcaro’s Eye, and you are the key.

With awed reverence, she placed it in a pool of moonlight at the room’s center and stepped away. The moon’s radiance enhancing the beauty of the carved alabaster magnified the emotions threatening to overwhelm her. After a steadying breath, she recited the ancient words taught her by the Guardians.

    "Elcaro, the All-Seeing Eye,

Grow to size that I may spy

Within your depths, the heart of things,

And all that The Unfolding brings.

Expand your width and height to be

My eyes so I may know and see.

I clap my hands to call you forth.

Spring to size from your true north."

Three sharp claps rang out. The tiny Elcaro’s Eye quivered. An azure mist swirled around it. Blazing white light flashed and faded, leaving the room enshrouded in night-like blackness. Almiralyn held her breath as the miniature fountain awakened from its state of suspended animation into the infinite and knowledgeable awareness for which it was known.

Moonlight beaming through the window dispersed the darkness and formed an aura of rainbow light around the full-sized Elcaro’s Eye. Almiralyn stared in wonder as water trickled from the open palms of her sculpted likeness. The rippling sound of its arrival in the large alabaster bowl hinted at the information it would impart at its own discretion when it determined the time was right.

The past faded. Almiralyn shifted her gaze from the water to the sanctuary window and then to her protector. I brought the All-Seeing Eye to size many sun cycles ago, Karrew. Why is Elcaro showing it to us now?

Karrew’s feathers ruffled. It must relate to the growing tension in Myrrh. Does the fountain have more to share?

Almiralyn touched the water and stared at her glistening fingertip. The immensity of her role and the responsibility she carried weighed heavily on her shoulders. So many seek this land and the secrets it holds.

Karrew’s soft caw brought her attention back to Elcaro’s Eye.

On its reflective surface, the bowl’s alabaster rim framed Old Earth in its hidden dimension parallel to the planet of Thera in the Clenaba Rolas Solar System. Two silhouetted figures soared high above it, their shadows darkening the land below. The image wavered, then scattered into tiny pieces that sank into oblivion.

Water, overflowing from the statue’s upturned palms, sent ripples dancing over the surface below.

Fingering her long, silver-blonde braid, Myrrh’s Guardian frowned. Uninvited visitors are flying this way, Karrew. I know you have just returned but—

It won’t hurt to take another look around. The raven cawed and unfurled his wings.

Almiralyn crossed to the window and held a curtain aside. Be careful. Don’t let whoever’s out there know you are abroad.

Karrew flew to the sill of the open window and touched her hand gently with his beak. Stay alert, Almiralyn. I’ll be back as soon as I can. He streaked toward the Terces Woods.

With her instincts thrumming an urgent warning, she watched her friend and protector disappeared in the clouds rolling over the forest bordering her land. Karrew’s absence further amplified her sense of foreboding. She always felt less vulnerable with him nearby.

Worry nudged her back to the fountain. She studied the gently undulating water and reviewed her options. Until you return, Karrew, patience is the key. Her spoken words hung unheard in the air.

Frustrated but knowing Elcaro would share more when the time was right, she left the sanctuary. Downstairs in the kitchen, she poured herself a cup of her favorite Dojanberry tea.

As her footsteps faded, an opaque fog billowed upward from Elcaro’s basin, obscured the carved likeness of Myrrh’s Guardian, and cascaded over the alabaster rim onto the floor.

The song of swirling water stilled. Mist hovered above the fountain and floated out the window, leaving the image of a large oval mirror in a gilded frame gleaming on the water’s surface. Silence hung like thick velvet curtains around Elcaro’s Eye.

A small, boot-clad foot unleashed the full force of childish rage and kicked the shining glass. Panting breaths accompanied the web of cracks that sent shimmering shards flying. A long fissure careened upward.

Triumphant laughter echoed through the sanctuary and down the stairs to the kitchen.

Almiralyn paused, her mug of tea midway to her mouth. A second laugh brought her to standing, her eyes glued to the ceiling. What is happening in the sanctuary?

She raced up the stairs and straight to the fountain. Her alabaster likeness sent sparkles of light into the air. The water’s surface glinted. She leaned closer. Elcaro, show me the recent past.

At the bottom of the bowl, the tip of Vesen, the quartz crystal encased in the fountain’s pedestal, glowed red. The cottage staircase flashed into being. Her image sprinting up the stairs quivered and dissipated.

Ripples filling the bowl informed her the occasionally contrary fountain had nothing more to share. Worry narrowed her eyes. The responsibility for the hidden remains of the once great planet Earth pulsed through her veins. She hurried to the window, her gaze darting over the landscape. Nothing triggered an alarm. Still, growing apprehension raised the hair on the back of her neck.

Almiralyn’s throat tightened. Where are you, Karrew Castilym? A cool afternoon breeze tossed the curtains inward. A squawk of warning announced the return of her protector. Relieved and curious, she moved aside.

Karrew skimmed the sill, landed on the back of an overstuffed chair, and cocked his head. Better shut it, Almiralyn. Storm’s on the way.

She pulled the window closed. For a moment, she stared at the raindrops splattering against the rectangular panes, then faced her friend. Did you discover anything new?

Zigzags of lightning flashed. Thunder rumbled. The raven ruffled his feathers. When they had settled along the curves of his body, he hopped onto her offered arm. Happy to have him home and safe, she smiled and arched her brows in a question.

I visited the folk of the woods and mountains. Everyone I spoke with shared a similar message—something’s amiss on Myrrh. They described two silhouetted figures flying repeated patterns over the Dojanack Mountains, the Grasslands, and the Terces Wood. Even the DeoNytes, who rarely leave the caverns deep in the mountains, are sensing danger they do not understand. He fluttered to the padded arm of the chair.

Almiralyn sank down beside him. Did you discover anything about what or who might be out there?

Nothing. Blue-black wings fanned the air. Has Elcaro’s Eye shared anything useful? The raven bobbed his head. I don’t suppose Chealim has been in touch?

Before she could answer, blinding pale-blue light filled the room, leaving the subject of Karrew’s inquiry towering over her. The Galactic Guardian’s radiant gaze held hers, then Karrew’s.

Almiralyn Nadrugia, Guardian of Myrrh. His deep voice, softened to accommodate human ears, warmed her. He bowed his head and touched his heart. Karrew Castilym of Roahymn.

One long stride carried Chealim to the window. He stooped to peer out, then straightened to his formidable height and faced them. Darkness the Galactic Council has yet to define gathers in the Clenaba Rolas Solar System. We believe whoever controls it is searching for you, Almiralyn, and the hidden secrets on this last piece of Old Earth.

The Galactic Guardian stood even taller, his head brushing the high ceiling. A long, silent moment passed. The seriousness in his expression when he returned his attention to her sent a chill racing up her backbone.

His brows drew together. The evil Mocendi League is expanding its reach. Its DiMensioner-trained assassins are spreading their malignant destruction throughout our galaxy without regard for life forms or solar systems. Unlike the Order of Esprow’s DiMensioners, whose aim is to accomplish good, the Mocendi are intent on upending everything positive in the Inner Universe. Their greed keeps them from progressing higher than the lowest level of DiMensionery, yet they wield their power with remarkable skill. Beware, Almiralyn. Do not underestimate them.

Almiralyn rose, her gaze fixed on his. I promise I will neither underestimate them nor disappoint you.

Chealim almost smiled. The Council knows you will continue to be vigilant and to do what you know must be done.

A smoky-gray cat sprinted into the sanctuary, howled in distress, and darted beneath the chair.

Chealim’s eyes became mere slits. Your unwanted visitors are drawing closer to your acreage. I suggest you shield the cottage and grounds from view. Blinding light flashed, leaving the spot where he had stood empty.

Majeska darted from the sanctuary. A clipped meow filled the stairwell.

Karrew cocked his head. Even Majeska is feeling the strangeness.

Almiralyn motioned for him to precede her and followed him down the stairs, through the kitchen, and into the back garden. Grateful the summer squall had passed, she scanned the paddock, gardens, ponds, and fields comprising her home.

Karrew perched on the peaked roof of the nearby tree house. Majeska paused on the back step, her tail twitching and nose sniffing. Almiralyn stooped to look the smokey gray cat in the eye. Go, Jeska, warn the Wood Tiffs and the Nyti. Have them tell all forest creatures to stay hidden until I send word.

As the cat darted across the garden into the Terces Wood, Almiralyn sang out,

"Shields, my cottage and gardens surround.

Hide them so well they cannot be found.

    Send any strangers wandering away;

Lost and confused, lead them astray."

The shields shooting upward into place left her tingling. She rubbed her arms and projected her senses outward. Satisfied her intruders would see only forest and meadows, she fixed her attention on Karrew. "We must find out who our enemies are and inform Allynae and the residents of Myrrh to be on the alert. I will join you in flight."

She stepped away from the tree and prepared to shift shape. An iridescent oval flared around her. Her bird form, somewhat smaller than Karrew, flashed into being. White as the first snow of winter, she unfurled gold-tipped wings, fanned the air, and soared upward. Scanning the horizon, she replayed Chealim’s warning in her mind. We must find the intruders before the intruders find us.

Side by side, she and her protector flew a crisscrossed path high above the immense field of sunflowers bordering the cottage on one side. As they swooped over the Terces Wood toward her brother’s cabin, Almiralyn sent Karrew ahead to confer with the Wood Tiffs and then soared higher. Far below, the mountains, prairies, and forests formed a patchwork of varied hues, shapes, and textures beneath her. When nothing sparked an alarm, she swooped into the forest. The transition carried her into silky shadows smelling of damp earth and the coolness of the coming night.

Landing in the leafy protection of a tall Tirips Tree, she merged into the silvery leaves. Something feels strange.

A mental search ruffled her white neck feathers into a bristly collar. She cocked her head to listen. Silence enshrouded the woods. Trees held themselves at attention. Wildlife paused in the twilight, alert and watchful.

In the cottage sanctuary, the turbulence in Elcaro’s Eye stilled. The crystal Vesen’s sentient essence welcomed the fiery rays of the setting sun that shot through the cottage window and glistened on the water’s calm surface. A small hand holding up a shard of broken glass emerged from the fountain’s depths. Silver light darted along the sharp edges.

Ripples scattered the image into small pieces that sank like bits of sparkling sand to the bottom of the bowl.

In the woods, a bird’s chirp broke the silence. Small critters chattered. Almiralyn’s bristling feathers smoothed. Whatever disturbed the peace has passed. She fluttered to the ground and materialized in human form.

Karrew alighted across the way. Tibin says he and the Wood Tiffs have seen nothing since late yesterday, nor have the tiny people of the Terces Wood.

Almiralyn gave a tendril of silver-blonde hair a tug. We need to share what has occurred with Allynae.

Her protector cawed his agreement and launched into flight. She shifted and shot after him. Within a short time, they arrived at the large clearing where her brother’s cabin sat in the shadow of the trees. Karrew flew to the back of a rocker on the porch.

Almiralyn shaped Human, sat next to him, and scanned the clearing. Alli’s feeding Saylo. He’ll be here shortly.

Karrew fanned his wings. He sure loves that horse.

She smiled inwardly as her tall, lanky brother stepped from the outbuilding and strolled across the clearing. Their parents had disappeared not long after his tenth Sun Cycle Celebration. She had been fifteen when she had taken him on as her responsibility. Since their arrival on Myrrh, a subtle change had occurred. Allynae had become her equal.

The porch step creaked under his tread. You look serious, Almiralyn Nadrugia.

She took his offered hand and stood. I just hope you won’t regret coming with me to Myrrh when you hear what I have to tell you, Alli.

I wouldn’t worry if I were you. He pushed the door open.

She glanced around the clearing. Karrew, please keep watch.

The large raven flew to an evergreen and alighted in the shadows.

Allynae studied him for a long moment before motioning her into the cozy interior. While she settled in a comfortable chair, he fetched water, handed her a filled glass, and sat down. You and Karrew are worried about something. What’s happened?

With the glass cupped in her hands, she focused on a droplet sliding from the lip into the water. A long sip later, she described all that had occurred. Her brother listened with total attention. His eyes, a lighter shade of blue than her own, narrowed in thought. She finished with a slight frown. I hope I can live up to the Council’s expectations.

Allynae stood, pulled her to her feet, and gazed down at her, his eyes gleaming with pride. Strong arms enveloped her in a bear hug. You have already established Myrrh as a haven for the children of Idronatti; you’ve neutralized the City Leaders’ control of the portal from the Five Towers into The Borderlands; and you’ve established yourself as a power to be reckoned with throughout the solar system. I think you’re living up to expectations. He pointed at his fieldstone fireplace. Chealim paid me a visit, as well.

Leaving the comfort of his arms, she crossed to the mantel to study a quartz crystal the size of an ostrich egg. It’s beautiful, Alli. Does it have a name?

Yes. Novissi. Once it’s connected to Elcaro’s Eye, I’ll be able to help monitor what’s happening on Myrrh. He edged her toward the door. Karrew’s getting impatient. Go, Almiralyn. He wants you safe at the cottage before moonrise. So do I. When shall we connect Novissi to the fountain?

I’ll contact you later tonight. She walked onto the porch and gazed at the fading streaks of salmon and gold arcing above the clearing. Her brother’s comforting arm around her shoulders made her smile. Thank you for your support, Alli. It means more than you know.

He gave her a quick hug. Keep your eyes open, Mira.

You, too. I’ll stay alert. So will Karrew. She kissed his cheek, shaped the white bird, and flew after her protector.

Quiet filled the Guardian’s sanctuary. The mirror, as though painted by an artist’s brush, appeared in Elcaro’s Eye. A circular web of cracks glinted near its bottom edge. Pieces of shattered glass dotted the basement floor. Reflected on the marred surface, a silhouette of a young boy holding a silvery shard lifted his hand and sliced his right cheek. Droplets of blood oozed from the wound. The boy dropped the shard. The mirror vanished. A single drop of scarlet floated on the fountain’s calm surface.

Above the forest canopy, the sun descended below the horizon. Velvet, black darkness slipped through the forest like a prowling panther, devouring the color and leaving the turning’s greens and browns muted to grays. Nothing unusual distracted from the sounds of night.

Almiralyn arrived at the border between her lands and the forest ahead of her friend and protector. An unexpected sensation of peril propelled her through the hayloft’s open doors and into human form. A quick check of the shields affirmed they held strong. She frowned.

Karrew’s arrival on her shoulder steadied her. Neither moved nor made a sound. Raven claws gripped harder. I’ll discover what I can at the cottage.

I’ll do a mental search from here. Almiralyn’s whispered words ruffled the single white feather on his breast.

Powerful wings carried him from the loft. Moments later, he swept in and alighted once more on her shoulder. Something is strange in the sanctuary. I suggest we teleport.

Almiralyn pictured the upstairs room. A breath later, they stood beside the fountain. Her eyes widened. At the calm center of the All-Seeing Eye floated a single, luminous drop of blood. Karrew’s talons dug into her shoulder. A shudder shook the bowl. The drop dissipated into a crimson sheen. As water overflowed the statue’s upturned palms, undulating ripples dispersed it.

Determination firmed her chin. Elcaro, show what caused the blood?

The water spilling into the bowl ceased. Light swirled up from Vesen’s crystal tip. Sunlight danced over the gilded frame of an oval mirror standing beside the fountain. The unmarred surface gleamed; a book rested on a table nearby. The fountain zoomed in on the book’s cover. The title read Through the Looking Glass, authored by Lewis Carrol. Sunlight changed to moonlight on the mirror’s surface. A raven cawed. The picture zoomed out to show Allynae, herself, and Karrew gathered around Elcaro’s Eye. To one side, the battered leather trunk sat open, exposing its treasures.

Karrew cocked his head. A flashback?

She nodded. I’m uncertain why, but perhaps it will help us determine what’s happening now.

On the fountain’s calm surface, the flashback played on like an old-fashioned, flickering movie, pulling Almiralyn and Karrew into the past.

Tall and regal, Almiralyn picked up the alabaster ladle from the trunk, dipped it into the water, and offered it to Allynae. When he had drunk his fill, she quenched her thirst and refocused on Elcaro’s Eye. Her plan to create a secret portal to Myrrh for Idronatti’s children took shape.

We have already clarified the destination point for the Tropal Portal in the sunflower field. Next, we must create an anchor point for the mirror portal in The Borderlands. She handed him the Compass of Ostradio. Please hold this above the fountain, Alli.

He took the offered compass and held it face down above the water.

    She recited the charm.

    "Elcaro’s Eye and compass fine,

Join forces to give us a sign

    Where destination points can stand

    In Myrrh’s buffer, The Borderland."

Ostradio glowed. Allynae turned the compass over. They could see only the blurred impression of the spinning needle. Three sharp claps brought it to a standstill. Concurrent pictures of a decrepit shoppe front materialized on both the compass face and the water’s surface. The weathered sign on the dark blue door read Antiques by Q.

Karrew fluttered to Allynae’s shoulder and studied the image. The shoppe will be a great place to hide the mirror.

Tipping the Stone of Remembering from its blue velvet pouch, Almiralyn touched it to the compass face, then placed it in the kneeling statue’s open palms. The Stone will secure the memory of the anchor and destination points to Ostradio and the fountain. Hold the compass in your right hand, face to the mirror. I’ll create the new portal anchor within Elcaro’s Eye. Karrew will carry it through the mirror and into The Borderlands. For him to return unharmed, switch the compass to your left hand when I tell you. Timing is critical. Questions?

    Allynae shook his head.

She tapped her shoulder. Karrew, please join your power to mine. The warmth of his body next to her cheek prompted her to continue. She let her mind grow empty but for the words of the portal charm.

"A new portal must come to be.

In the fountain, let us see

    It emerge from its beginning,

    Swirling, whirling, vortex spinning.

Make a keyhole at its center

    Hidden until one would enter.

    Index finger makes the sign

To open up this portal line."

Elcaro’s Eye began to glow. Golden light soaked the pedestal’s base and radiated upward. It saturated the smooth roundness of the bowl, drenched the alabaster statue with color, and spread across the surface. The water churned, opening a funnel from the surface to the tip of Vesen. Radiant light shot up through the opening and exploded. A rain of diamond sparkles pelted down, creating a spinning, phosphorescent, disc-like anchor at the fountain’s center.

Almiralyn clapped her hands. Eero Tye Como! The vortex swirled out to fill the bowl. Oree Eyt Omoc! It shrunk to the size of a coin and solidified. Karrew swooped, snatched it in his beak, and landed on Allynae’s shoulder.

The Compass of Ostradio’s golden needle spun. Almiralyn’s voice rang out.

    "Whirling vortex, compass points,

Join to mirror like bones to joints.

    Spin within the captive space;

    Remain forever in this place.

    Transport to The Borderlands,

    Hidden secret from brigands.

To the shoppe, Antiques by Q,

    Anchor there this portal new."

As she completed the last line, a roiling mist overflowed the mirror onto the sanctuary floor. A large keyhole appeared at its reflective center. Karrew vanished through it. Now, Alli! Switch hands.

The compass flipped into the air and plummeted. Allynae caught it midway to the floor, and, panting, held it up in his left hand.

Karrew’s deep caw preceded his reappearance from the haze as thunder clapped. The mirror flashed from sight. Raven talons gripped Almiralyn’s shoulder. That was close.

Allynae ran shaking fingers through his hair. Sorry, old friend. Good thing you’re quick.

Elcaro’s focus changed to show the mirror portal in its new home in the basement of Antiques by Q. Eddies swirling across the water erased the image and left ripples in concentric circles skimming over the surface.

Almiralyn frowned as the water stilled. I asked what caused the blood. Her brow furrowed. The fountain can be abstruse, but I believe it just gave us an answer.

Karrew’s wings quivered. The mirror portal... He glided to the windowsill. Allynae may have a thought or two. Why don’t you contact him? I’ll do a quick patrol and then stand guard. The wha wha of raven wings faded over the garden.

Almiralyn gazed into the water and directed the fountain’s magic.

"Elcaro’s Eye, please thread the web

Before the full moon’s power ebbs.

    Connect Novissi to your heart,

So Allynae may do his part."

A whirlpool formed at the fountain’s center, spun into a frothing swirl, and sucked the foam into its vortex.

Stillness brought Allynae’s face to the mirror-like surface.

Good evening, Almiralyn. Novissi is glowing. I gather it is now connected to Elcaro’s Eye?

Yes, Alli, and through it to the Prima Crystal, Evolsefil, which will allow it to keep you informed regarding Myrrh, Thera, and beyond. She bit her lip.

You look worried. Better fill me in.

She described the blood in the fountain. I asked Elcaro where it came from. Do you remember the night we created the mirror portal in The Borderlands?

How could I forget? I almost ended Karrew’s life. Why?

Karrew and I just watched a flashback in the fountain. I’m certain the mirror portal has something to do with the strangeness on Myrrh.

His rugged features, so like their father’s, grew thoughtful. Why isn’t the fountain showing what you need to know?

What it shows us may seem arbitrary, but I’ve never known it to play games. It responded to my question. She yawned. I’m simply too tired to see the answer.

Allynae studied her. You’re fighting exhaustion. Get some sleep. I’ll ride over in the morning. We can figure out Elcaro’s message when we’re fresh. He gave her a clipped salute. Goodnight, Guardian of Myrrh.

She stifled another yawn and grinned. Goodnight, my favorite brother.

He chuckled. "I’m your only brother."

Water spilled from the statue’s hands, erasing his image and reclaiming the fountain. The soft, rhythmic sound soothed her frayed nerves. Moonlight beckoned. She moved to the window and soaked in the beauty of her land—the shadowed shape of the barn, the sparkles of starlight on the pond. A full-bodied yawn brought tears to her eyes. Our mystery can wait. I need a good night’s sleep. I’m more tired than I have been since I first arrived in Myrrh.

In her bedroom, she stripped off her clothes, pulled on her nightdress, and slid between the crisp, cool sheets. The night’s quiet and the knowledge her protector would return soon lulled her into a deep sleep.

Perched on the thatched roof, the raven Karrew kept watch. His eyes, gleaming like polished obsidian, scanned the night sky. For the moment, you are safe, Almiralyn. His neck feathers spiked. I intend to keep you that way.

Almiralyn woke as dawn’s warm light penetrated the sheer curtains covering her bedroom windows. Rolling onto her back, she stared up at the ceiling, her sapphire blue eyes narrowed in thought.

Allynae will be here soon. Today, we must discover who terrorizes the Land of Myrrh. Her lips pursed. Why do they bring hatred and fear into the land? Is this the beginning of the prophesied Unfolding?

She slid from beneath the covers, gathered her clothes, and crossed to her personal needs space. A fine mist of water warming her skin refocused her thoughts. With a sigh, she gave herself permission to relax.

In the sanctuary, morning light illuminated the fountain’s glistening white alabaster. The statue’s sapphire eyes gleamed. Water droplets slowed, then ceased. A hint of red glistened as scattered shards of glass formed on the water’s surface. Elcaro’s Eye zoomed out to show the portal mirror with a web of breaks and a long, vertical crack bisecting the surface all the way to the center. A boy’s silhouetted hand touched a shadowed cheek, then held a blood-soaked finger up in the dim light. His voice rang out. You will be sorry, Mira. Someday, I will find my way back to Myrrh. A quick, calculated movement smeared sticky scarlet down the length of the crack. Angry footsteps retreated, echoing through the cottage before diminishing into silence.

Almiralyn finished dressing, pulled on her boots, and glanced at herself in the mirror. The faint sounds of a youthful voice and retreating footsteps informed her the fountain was awake and sharing. She hastened to the sanctuary, where the image of the mirror portal in The Borderlands gleamed on Elcaro’s calm water, its diagonal crack filled with blood.

Swirling water erased the mirror and stilled. Images of Allynae, his skittish roan mare, and two silhouetted figures high overhead, flashed in a repeated sequence and vanished.

The sound of cascading water filled the sanctuary. The whisper of a light breeze lifted the curtains at the window, kissed the cheek of the alabaster statue, and grew still.

A rush of foreboding left Almiralyn breathless. She slowed her racing thoughts and formulated a question. Elcaro, please contact my brother, Allynae.

Murky darkness cycloned upward from the depths of the basin. Distorted images flickered and faded. Water’s rippling song informed her Elcaro had shared all it was willing to reveal.

Hurrying downstairs, she arrived in the kitchen as her protector glided through the open window and alighted on his perch. Karrew! She hurried forward. Have you made your morning patrol?

The large raven made a clicking sound, opened his black beak wide, and snapped it shut. A deep gurgle preceded his croaked response. The protective wards shielding our acreage hold steady; all is as it should be at Allynae’s cabin, but I saw no sign of him or his horse. You look worried. Is everything alright?

She shared what she had seen in the fountain. I know Alli is in trouble. When I ask the fountain to contact him for me, a series of images flashed, but nothing concrete. She frowned. Maybe I didn’t ask the right question.

Karrew ruffled his neck feathers. Perhaps we should allow the fountain to share in its own way.

Almiralyn tilted her head and tugged at her long silver-blonde braid. Come with me.

From the sanctuary doorway, she watched her protector land on the fountain’s rim. Then, fixing her attention on the continuous flow of droplets, she joined him. All-Seeing Eye, please show us what you know of Allynae’s whereabouts.

The drops ceased their gentle cascade. Smooth water glistened, forming an image of the mirror portal leading from the Borderlands to Myrrh. The diagonal crack glinted in the dim light before the picture dissolved into nothing.

Water overflowing from upraised palms created a quiet, rhythmic song. Elcaro’s tranquil presence filled the sanctuary.

Karrew cocked his head. I believe we have a lead.

Almiralyn blew out a relieved breath. Let’s go see what we can discover.

With hope ignited, she shifted shape. Her white bird, gold-tipped wings gleaming, shot through the open window, and soared over the garden to the sunflower field bordering her land. A soft whinny brought her to the ground near Saylo, Allynae’s mare.

The horse greeted her materialization to Human with a nervous toss of her head. Almiralyn approached, her movements slow and non-threatening. The mare’s nostrils flared; her ears flattened. Almiralyn laid a gentle hand on the white blaze on her forehead.

Karrew landed nearby on a large sunflower. What frightened her?

Careful not to startle the horse further, she made a cautious mental probe. Memories of ominous shadows passing overhead flickered and faded. Saylo took a restless step sideways and nickered.

Almiralyn’s brows bridged in thought. I just saw the sinister shadows Elcaro shared in Saylo’s mind. Has anyone mentioned seeing them to you, Karrew?

He fluffed his feathers. Several villagers reported the shadow of doom flying over their fields.

She nodded. More about our strange visitors after we find Alli.

Her protector fluttered to her shoulder. He’s not anywhere near here. I think we should explore the portal.

I agree. Almiralyn patted the horse’s flank. Stay here, girl. We’ll be back.

After moving away from the skittish mare, she whispered the Key for the Tropal Portal. A spinning circle began as a twinkle of golden light and grew to the height of a tall Human. You take the lead, Karrew.

A low croak of acknowledgement, and the raven swooped into the swirling gold vortex.

Almiralyn ran toward the gateway to The Borderlands and leapt into its center. Suspended aloft in the tunnel between dimensions, she watched her protector floating in the distance. Streaks of shimmering color flashed by. Intense silence pressed against her eardrums. Karrew vanished through the portal exit. Accelerating time propelled her after him. She landed on hands and knees in a darkened basement smelling of dampness, dust, and the mustiness of old, abandoned things. She forced her body and mind to be still and listened for her raven.

The soft wha wha of his wings alerted her to his presence. All clear, Almiralyn.

She rose and held out an upraised palm. A ball of blue light glowed. Squinting to see through the darkness, she rotated slowly. The crack in the mirror’s surface glinted a dull silver. Light illuminating the floor revealed a foot. She lifted her hand higher. Allynae lay sprawled on his stomach, unmoving.

Dropping to her knees beside him, she touched his brow. Alli? His lack of response made her throat tighten.

A soft moan and fingers grasping her wrist sent a wave of relief rushing through her.

    Karrew landed next to them.

Allynae’s eyes blinked open. With a gulped breath, he rolled onto his side and struggled to sitting. Almiralyn? His confused gaze darted from her face to the mirror. What—where—Ouch! He groaned, touched a large lump on the back of his head, and stared at his blood-sticky hand.

Footsteps in the shoppe overhead acted like a shot of adrenaline.

Karrew pranced from one foot to the other. We need to leave. Can you stand, Alli?

    I th-think so.

Almiralyn helped him up. With a deft flick of her wrist, she drew a keyhole on the mirror’s surface. A roiling mist took shape and tumbled onto the floor as the portal entrance expanded.

The door at the top of the stairs creaked.

Raven wings unfurled. Karrew shot into the gateway. Allynae stumbled after him. Almiralyn followed. Streaks of color rushed by. The keyhole-shaped outlet formed in the distance. Time sped up. Energy caught them and tossed them head over heels into the sunflower field. Behind them, the vortex spun faster in preparation for another exit.

Jumping to her feet, Almiralyn brushed dirt and dried petals from her pants and grabbed Allynae’s arm. I’m teleporting Alli to the cottage, Karrew. Make sure no one follows.

She pictured the kitchen. They arrived in an instant. Allynae gripped the firmness of the table’s smooth round-over edge and lowered himself onto a chair.

Almiralyn touched his shoulder. I’ll check the shields, then take care of your wound. As he lowered his forehead onto folded arms, she hastened from the kitchen and up the stairs to her sanctuary.

A quick mental survey of the protective wards satisfied her the cottage and land remained invisible. She retrieved the healing knife, Efillaeh, from the trunk and returned to the kitchen.

After examining the gash on Allynae’s head, she withdrew the blade and held it up in the light. She had only used it on two occasions since her arrival in Myrrh and knew its simple beauty belied its power.

    Are you ready, Alli?

Yes. Pain saturated the whispered reply.

Almiralyn touched the tip of the silvery blade to the gash. The amethysts in the hilt glowed and sent a lavender mist to surround her brother’s upper body. From the etchings on the blade, tendrils of emerald-green, writhing like tiny snakes, encircled the wound. Allynae shivered and grew still. The ragged, bloody edges of the deep laceration stretched upward, met over the gaping cut, and reknit, leaving only a faint white scar. Amethyst and emerald light withdrew and faded. Efillaeh, which had grown warm in her hand,
