    THE FIRST WEEK OF ADVENT

    Maggie looked at the array of small toys and trinkets on the dining room table. A plastic fighter jet. A ballerina that fit over a child’s index finger to make it dance. A small bag of colored marbles. There were more things for Jemmy than for Mila. Would she notice? Would she care? Will there be tears?

    Can you just explain to me why we have to do Christmas morning less than a week after Thanksgiving? she asked her husband who stood in their kitchen in front of the new Cornue stove—an early Christmas present to himself.

    You know why, Laurent said as he reached for the Herbes de Provence and sprinkled it liberally over the bubbling stew in the pot he was stirring on the stove.

    Well, it makes no sense. Maggie blew an errant strand of hair from her face as she taped down the ends of a gaily colored package on the table before her. It flies in the face of serenity and peace and all that other crap you’re supposed to feel at Christmas when you have to run around and create Christmas morning before Thanksgiving is even over.

    Laurent turned and smiled at her.

    Which just made her madder.

    I really don’t have time for this, Maggie said. "My blog post was supposed to have gone out yesterday and I don’t even have an idea of what I’m writing about! Danielle and Jeannette Pernon drove over this morning with about a dozen almond tarts
