JULY FOURTH!

Lucy Summers impatiently stood in the coffee aisle of Pure Foods, scrolling through the long shopping list her husband, Mark, had texted her that morning. Juggling an armful of organic sausage, grass-fed wagyu steaks, baby back ribs, smelly French cheese, and olives, she found herself growing increasingly frustrated. Not only was Pure Foods outrageously expensive, but it was also located in a part of town she would typically avoid, especially on the July Fourth weekend. However, Mark insisted she shop there instead of the closer, cheaper Value-Save.

Newlyweds, Lucy and Mark worked at the same hedge fund, albeit in different divisions. Lucy worked in accounting, while Mark was a trader. They first met years ago when they were working for rival companies. They both played on their respective company softball teams. Lucy, known for her impressive pitching skills, consistently struck Mark out whenever he stepped up to bat. Having played softball competitively during her college years, she possessed a hell of a slider, nearly unhittable.

The second-to-last item on her list was a bag of those exorbitantly priced coffee beans that Asian monkeys supposedly pooped out. As she continued scanning the shelves, a tall, skinny blonde in yoga wear blocked her path while loudly chatting on her cell phone.

Clearing her throat, Lucy tried to get the woman's attention. The blonde shot her the side-eye, quickly sizing her up before resuming her call.
